best to take them off to get a good job done, but just wire wheel them to get anything loose off and get a good surface to apply paint, then prime it, then 3 coats of paint. <--thats too make it last
quick method that wont hold up, just get up under it with a can of rustoleum and go to town.

Krylon and remove sand paint...wait a minute, I'm in Advanced tech forum...Boo this man ,and his rainbow paint jobs ...lol... I paint to keep rust down to minumum So if you do paint use gloss flat paint pulls moisture in and defeats the pupouse .

you cant paint the coils.... Paint makes a "hard" coating (which is why it flakes) and the coils cycle to much. you can powder coat them or get a special paint made for moving parts.
