Painted mine with a rattle can.... Bedlined it first and then sanded that to remove some of the texture leaving a nice hammered feel and then topcoated with Krylon Moss Green Outdoor Spaces (uv and weather resistant) and satin black and it turned out great! No stripes.... The key it to tape off and do one section at a time and keep it wet. You get stripes from poor application and getting in a hurry not overlapping your paint correctly. I may have a slight advantage here though, being a professional painter for the last 20 years has gave me lots of practice

If you go with a roll on, add a little penetrol to the paint to extend drying time. This allows it to flow and level out better giving a smoother finish coat.... and use a woven roller (fluffed and washed before use) to avoid any shedding or roller fiber in the paint.

I have a white 91 and when i put the later body molding on i painted it white with the dupli-color that you find in the auto parts store in the quart cans. You have to use a compressor and a spray gun. That was the first time i had done it and it turned out to be a perfect match in color. I used a clear top coat as well. Your final paint job will only be as good as your prep job.

I achieved it by tons of spray paint expierence, holding the can 10 inches from the jeep, painting in an even sweeping motion, and tons of wetsanding. Look at my jeep's pictures in the album on my profile.
i rattle canned the hood on my '84 XJ using semi-gloss black engine enamel, and i sanded the crap out of the hood and fenders (it was in a wreck and i didn't have the correct color of green) shoot a medium coat of primer, let dry, sand it smooth and wipe with a solvent (that wont dissolve the primer) then start light and do multiple light coats, after it dries to the touch, park in the sun for the paint to cure or use heat lamps (NOT A HEAT GUN as a friend of mine found out the hard way), its time consuming, but you'll be pleased with the results, just my .02

i did see one guy use a roller and some (i guess house paint) and paint is truck tweety bird yellow, i was actually surprised at how nice it came out, almost couldnt tell that it wasnt semi-pro
but he says it took him forever to do
i say stick to the can
i used a rattle can and everything came out just fine
dont need to use hard grit either - i used some 180 for the intial sanding, no primer and some 320 grit for my fine sanding
just prep it real good;
wash it, wet sand it, wash it, dry it, paint it, let it dry, fine wet sand it, wash it, dry it and paint it again
this (below) was 2 days (about 4 hours) of actual work
most of the 2 days was the waiting game of letting it dry in between everything
