The rust spots were brought to bare metal and primed. And the chips and scratches smoothed out. Primer would only be needed there, because otherwise everything is smooth and even.

I painted my 51 ****** wagon with a roller and some spray Rustoleum and it lasted at least 5 years... and they areas that started looking a bit rough after five years i just sanded them a bit and touched them up.... it looked great... probably better than it did from the factory, the only issue i had was i painted the door panels white after i painted the base forrest green and it took a lot of coats to stop the green from bleeding through....
