i got one from i believe a 96 and took the wiring harness also that went behind the glovebox. I had to swap a few wires in the harness but wasnt a challenge at all. Im not sure on pre 96 though. Try to grab the wiring harness incase as mine didnt have the plug for it above the headliner

I have a consol from a '97 to put in my '01 sport. I haven't had a chance to put it in yet,I was hoping to find an '01 in the junk yard to get the fabric from the headliner since the color of the 97 doesn't match. I cut out the 97's headliner so I could just hold it up to mine to see where to cut the mounting holes. Don't forget to get the rear mounting plate from the donar car too.So far I don't think the correct harness is in my car,but I did pull the complete one out of the 97.I know some of it goes to the speedo for the gas milage and odometer display and to the grill for the air temp.

basically you just match up the wires on the donor harness with the connector behind the glovebox. swap the wires on the donor harness because you have room to work. Its not all that hard.
good luck

Great write up thanks. As soon as it gets warmer out I'll do it. Only thing I don't understand yet is the temp sender. Is the wireing in for that too? would there be a connector behind the grill for it too? Thanks

yup, its already there. pop out the headlight bezels (2 screws each) and the grill (4 screws.) I cant remember if it was dead center or not, but its near the bottom kind of tucked away. Grab one at the junkyard next time your there. When i installed mine, i had to calibrate it (last paragraph of my writeup) and you will probably have to do it also.
