I have switched to Rotella T4 conventional oil, which is technically made for diesel engines. To prevent damage to my catalytic converter I am considering installing an oil separator - rather than burning the vapors, let it vacuum into a catch can. I've read it may improve fuel economy. What is the consensus? Worth it, or just hype? Any brand recommendations?

Get a big one. I put a cheap 12oz one on my cherokee and it fills up pretty quick. Not sure if it helps with fuel economy. Im running with a 62mm bored tb, 24lb injectors, banks header, and no cat.

Update on the catch can. I have only driven 100 miles with no oil in the catch can.
I used Mishimoto vacuum lines, the line was too tight to get onto the nipple of the intake box, so I soaked it in gasoline for a few hours and it stretched right on. I don't think the catch can is doing much, but the new vacuum lines seem like an improvement.
