Is all dino oil the same?

Has anybody used Spectrum Brand oil? It's under $16 for 6 quarts, which would save me $7 over the store brand and $10+ over the National brands...

Thoughts????

I have seen it at Kmart locally and have always been advised to steer clear of it. Have heard issues with trying to get an MSDS for that oil and i am not sure who makes it. Hope this helps

I use Rotella in both my bike and jeep. Good oil, low price.

Yup, it's fine use it if you want.Good as most major brands, better than Q.state and Pissoil.
Funny how you ask one ? and you get an answer on what they use for oil.

If it meets specs then go ahead. Would I run it? No, but I'm also very picky about oil.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll stick to "known" brands.

Since you asked the question "Is oil just oil?", I take that as you asking, is the name brand oil the same as off brand?

You can take what I quote here with a grain of salt if you want, obviously its debatable. I am just relaying some information I received from an "informed" person who I know, respect and who I know is really smart. He just so happens to sell Schaeffer oil. He runs it in his drags, belived in Schaeffer oil so much he wanted to sell.

Anyway, this is what he had to say about "oils", take or leave it, I don't care. Like i said above Im not trying to start a crazy dispute, just trying to help you out and pass on the information I recieved when I asked the same question. He didn't even try to promote Schaeffer over Ames, just a straight up anwer.

He says,

The biggest thing about oil products is the BASE oil in the product, it comes in different Groups / levels. Most oil company’s do not bring it up, because they are using the lowest group . Here’s the thing, oil like Shell for example or any other big name oil is a bi-product from making gas . 1 crude barrel of oil (42 gallon) produces around 28 gallons of fuel, 6 gallons of napathtic oil, grease and asphalt , and ½ a gallon of paraffin oil (the highest quality) so Shell , Castrol , and quacker state all use the low grade , they are all owned by fuel company’s they have to get rid of it. Companies that only specialize in lubricants and want to sell something better, buy the paraffin oil , like Schaeffer’s , royal purple, and AMES oil. After you get a good base oil then the additive you put in it , is what makes them different from one another. There is a lot more to it, but I don’t type fast so this is the shorter version.

Yes, my question referred to wlakling into a parts store, if it matters what the name on the package says.

Interesting information though. As an intelligent person, with no knowledge of oil, my first question based on your information would be whether the higher quality base would see any difference in function in an XJ motor...but I bet that's a conversation that can go on forever...
