Default Nutserts: What Size to Use?

I got a used set of nerf bars for my XJ that I plan to insall unsing nutserts (also called riv-nuts) to bolt them to the frame rails. I have never used these before, so I'm not sure what type/size to use. Can anyone help me out with some advice on selecting the right nutsert? I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I would only use the nutserts if that is the way the company planed to mount them. I have seen smaller ones like #10s strip out and pull out at work. I would bolt them with a spacer to keep from crushing the frame.

If you plan on only using them for decoration rivnuts would be fine. If you plan on actually using them then as previously mentioned use nuts, bolts & spacers.

The Jeep I took them off of had them mounted with nutserts, so I assumed that was the way to go. If that's not the best way to go then I would rather do something else. How exactly would it work to mount then with "nuts, bolts, and a spacers"? Guess I'm just having a hard time visaulizing how to do that. Any suggestions? Maybe a picture or drawing if you have something available.

Here's what they look like (not the actual bars, but a very close picture I found online). As you can see, they have mounting plates with bolt holes attached to ends. These plates sit flush against the frame rails and were bolted to the frame rails with nutserts on the original vehicle. Is there is a better/stronger way to mount them? If so, how would it be done? If not, how do I figure out what type/size of nutsert to use? Any suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
