I started to do my sye swap in my 1997 np242j. When I pulled the cover off I found shavings. And the magnet was full. So I did a full rebuild also adding a 6 pinion planetary and replacing the front output shaft. Someone had rebuilt the T-case before and dinged the front output shaft and put it back in. Any way I got the two halves put back together including the new oil pump. I gathered all the sye parts and started to see what was there. I see the large clip with the bent end that goes to the main bearing in the sye cone. There are also two more clips that go before and after the plastic speedo gear. But there is one more C clip and I can't figure out where it goes. It's bigger diameter than the two clips for the speedo. Anyone know where it goes I'd appreciate any suggestions.
I can't say with any certainty, but I ran into a similar issue when rebuilding a NP242 and in my case, it was used to retain the Input Shaft to the Input Bearing, making for an easy fix...

I just finished the install of the same kit a week ago. This issue with the extra lock ring was killing me for a hot minute. After googling it endlessly, I finally saw a review on the Tom Woods NP242 site saying that somebody else had the same issue.
My findings are that that lock ring is not used in the NP242 kit. I believe that Advance Adapters must be making those little baggies for multiple SYE kits. I could of course be wrong, and if I am I'm screwed. But that's all I could come up with; I could not figure out where that extra medium-sized lock ring would go...
Now of course, I have another thread in this sub-forum talking about a whirring noise in the case after installing this kit. Wouldn't it be hilarious if this was my problem? lol
Hard to tell just by a quick photo. I could definitely tell you if I was there. When I rebuilt mine, I had bought a Jeep 242 rebuild manual. Was pretty cheap on Ebay, and it helped me place a proper name to all the individual parts. I know it doesn't help you much, so here's the thread on my rebuild. Maybe you can pick it apart and see where you went wrong.
lol I hope not.I took mine over to a local shop that knows a lot about these. He split the case, corrected something I did wrong and was done rather quickly.
