Not an opinion. Fact. Do some research. The 231 is a teeny bit stronger. That's all.

My rig is equipped with 231 and it has result to be way better than 242 here in Panama where we do mud.
Proven.
BTW, I modify 4x4's and also 20+ years experienced mechanic.

You realize that a 242 in PartTime performs just like a 231, right?

Yes, but it's not reliable as 231. For use as full time I rather go and find a Lada niva, full time 4WD, it's transfer case design, wich is a differential with a manual locker to send equal traction to both diffs, is the matrix where most of full time 4wd's vehicle manufacturers took it design and performance to build their own t-cases.

Whatever you may think, regardless the functionability and performance comparison between 231 and 242, I rather go on 231 for reliability and strenght before using a 242.

Did you just say that a Soviet vehicle is better than an XJ?

Now you're just trolling.

Oh, so now I get it.

It's your opinion and preference to use the 231.

Not fact, like you stated first off that the 231 was way stronger than the 242......

I never said it's better than an xj, I'm refering to it for the full time 4x4 drive system.

yeah but they are so damn expensive. Especially after adding a driveshaft. Tom woods makes one too but their site is confusing so it’s hard to understand their pricing

No worries dude, that's your opinion. I stay on what I've been doing and fixing in my rig.
Simple, want a stronger t-case, invest in adapters and Dana 20, 300 or even other NP model or even an atlas.

I stay with 231. No problems at all.
