Hello all. I am new to the forum, but not the sport. Here's the deal:

I have a 2wd 1995 Cherokee XJ that I am in the process of converting to a 4wd. I bought a non-running 4wd 1991 Cherokee XJ donor vehicle for cheap. One thing I realized is that my parts vehicle is a 'Limited' trim, and has an NP242 T-case instead of the NP231 I was expecting to find. Althought most XJ's ran with the 231's, Will I find any trouble installing the 242? Both are 4.0's. Any information would help.

And no, selling the 2wd and buying a fully functional 4x4 isn't an option. Thanks for asking.

 

No more than u would have with 231. 242 is better tcase anyway

That it doesnt. But you domt have to run locked either lol. I have 242 so i gots to support what i gots. Plus hack n tap is a good way to go anyway lol.

 

Awesome. Thank you for the fast reply! One more question. The NP242 is an electronicaly controlled t-case as opposed to the linkage driven 231. Any wiring/pcm issues I might encounter? I'd rather find out now(before the build fully begins) rather than halfway through.

Last Question: My transmission in the donor Jeep has a switch on the steering panel that tunes the tranny to "performance" or "comfort". Will this wiring/pcm cause any issues on a swap, considering the original Jeep has nothing like that?

 

The 242 has a mechanical linkage just like the 231. There isn't much in the way of aftermarket support for the 242 unfortunately.

 

You may end up using the newer tcm which does not have that power/comfort option, is your jeep a high output or a renix?

power/comfort switch only affected the auto trans shift points

 

I understand that, but is it going to affect the trans when I swap that into the build cherokee? I don't know how difficult it will be to run any kind of wiring on it.

By the way, I started pulling the front end off the donor and the build has begun.

 

Should be fine with the 242, unless you have a separate trans that you are swapping, you would be swapping the 4wd trans/tcase. So no worries there.
