Default Np242 hack&tap vs sye

Looking for real work advice on np242 dye vs h&t.

I know the proper SYE is stoooopid expensive compared to the darn 231. I want my full time 4x4.

I know that h&t leaves splines a little further from The output bearing than is ideal. Is this a very big deal, or just nit picking an issue that would take a long long time to really if ever have an issue from.

My bigger question is does h&t create VIBES at highway speed?

Many people run the hack and tap with no issues. It will get rid of your driveline vibrations if done properly and the driveshaft you use is balanced, most people use a front driveshaft in the rear when the do a hack and tap.

H&T or full SYE are fine. Vibrations are caused by driveline angles incorrect or bad driveshafts.

As stated some people can use the front driveshafts, but anytime going to a H&T or full install you need to do your home work for a driveshaft.

I plan on using a new Adam's D'S in the back. What do you mean, if done properly?

will tapping this create VIBES at highway speeds? I've read this method doesn't get it drilled/ tapped perfectly center.

You nailed it on the head. You need to ensure the cut is straight and the hole is done on center properly.

If this is not the case, then you are causing the flange for the h&t to run off center which will cause vibrations and possible damage.

Is that really doable without removal, machining the ouput?

Having a centering jig for the output shaft drilling + tapping is probably a good idea

I put a woody in my rear.

Full Tom Woods SYE kit with new driveshaft. It's an excuse to rebuild the transfer case and get fresh bearings and seals in it. Though I suppose you could justify a case rebuild with a H&T as well.

The nice thing is that you just take the case apart and grab a few different parts when putting it back together. It was stupid easy.

Ide rather the full SYE, I just don't get why they almost double the price on the 242 when your getting the same as a 231.
oh well I suppose.

Parts rarity mostly, compared to the 231. That's why there's a $400 core charge for the shaft and the tail housing. They also cut off past the old splines and machine new ones onto the smooth section (netting almost 6" shorter than factory), making it as short as possible, as well as machining the housing and giving it a new seal. I have a true SYE'd 242 sitting here if you're interested; haven't got around to putting it up for sale locally yet.

I'll say, having a tom woods SYE in my 242 is a nice thought. No worrying about hack and tap. I got it on a steal already installed and no worries at all.

I put a H&T on my 231. It was pretty easy with the centering jig from IRO. It’s less than ideal, but it really gets the job done on a budget. I’m usually a spare no expense kind of guy, but $2500 and 3 full months of no jeep (I rebuilt everything from the transfer case to the back bumper including stiffeners and all that fun stuff,) the H&T was my quickest and easiest option for getting my jeep back on the road. Just my thoughts.

I would just get the hack n tap, you can always upgrade later if it doesn't work out.
