242's awesome in snow. People always say that the 231 is stronger but I've also never heard of anyone having worse luck with a 242. Unless you're planning to run 40's (In which case you're probably pretty comfortable with a T-case swap) It probably should take a backseat to other factors like mileage, condition, axles, motor, etc.

there is a red tag on the back side with the case number on it, or if you have 2H,4H,4L its a 231
2H,4h part time, 4H full time, 4L then its a 242.
I have ran both, Have not had a problem with either. For me the 231 is better due to aftermarket support. SYE, 2L kit, 4-1 kit, doubler kits ect. the 242 just has the HNT. Both will get the job done if none of those are a factor.
