Default Notching dash to hold Cobra 29 CB

I've read many threads on how much it sucks to find a good location to mount a CB. I normally run a smaller Uniden 520 but scored a sweet deal on a Cobra 29 LTD classic. This thing is huge and I can't seem to find a good place to mount it. I'm half tempted to notch the dash, create a pan so to speak, and recess it into the top of the dash......

It would lower it and allow me to move it back a few inches as well. My only dilema is my 96 classics dash is cherry.

Anyone else ever try this?

I just stuck mine under the dash on the passanger side, it cuts into passanger leg room a little but not too much (it helps if you sto the mic cable in the "shelf" or otherwise out of the way):

The notch is an intresting idea, but it would probably take allot of work to make it look right.

Looks pretty clean right there, however with multiple passengers their legs are already to close to the dash as it is.

I hung one from the ceiling in an 89 and it was right above the rear view mirror and to the right a little. I was able to make 2 brackets out of sheet metal and screw them into the supports in the roof which are thick enough to use 1/4 inch screws to hold the sheet metal up and not penetrate the roof. Then I put the liner back up and cut small pieces out to get the brackets by and after that was all done I just mounted the CB to the brackets and boom! It looked sweet.

Be creative

This radio works to good, with all the adjustments you can pick up chatter from all over. However I don't live close to any major hwy/freeway so I don't think anyone could hear me Mic Checking.

Only thing is I had to mount an external speaker up on the dash cause the speaker was up against the seat

I tied into the fuse panel to draw power, which is causing some feedback so I'm going to go directly to the battery. Also my antenna is really close to my radio, I coiled up several feet of coax, apparently this is a NoNo so I'm going to have to re-route it to make a long loop to get the SWR correct.

That’s exactly where I mounted mine and it hasn't been in the way at all.

I also put an expanding plug in the cigarette lighter to mount the mic bracket which makes the mic handy to get to.

It's perfectly out the way. However I'm having problems adjusting the SWR, can't trust the swr meter on the cb itself, I'm gonna pick up a swr meter tomorrow and a new coax cable and try again. I bought the whole package used, the coax had a small kink and I think that may be a problem.
