New Exhaust?
I'm ready for a change in sound on my 1998 Cherokee classic. What is a deep toned muffler (not too loud) at a moderate cost I could get WITHOUT a cat delete?

I've run a few exhaust systems: glass packs, magnaflow and 2 types of Flowmaster 40s and I'd go with the Flowmaster. My favorite setup was a delta 40 with 2.5 inch piping from the muffler back. Nice lope at idle and smooth under throttle, deepest tone I've heard from any xj exhaust.

To me, Flowmasters make the 4.0L sound like a lawnmower. Lift that Jeep, slap a mower deck under it and hit the fields. They're relatively cheap, but they sound like it.
I went with a Gibson cat back. It has a deep tone with no drone, and it's not overly loud. You can tell when you hear it that it isn't stock. It doesn't wake the neighbors, though. It's not the cheapest (I paid $327), but you get what you pay for.
That's still pretty inexpensive for an exhaust system. Decent cat backs for my Subaru start around $650.

just a forewarning. We aren't allowed to even talk about deleting cats.

For whoever hates Flowmasters with the 4.0, have you ever heard a 50 or 60 series delta flow behind the 4.0? I personally love how they sound. So many guys who do Flowmaster with their Jeeps use 40's or 44's, and that's just noisey garbage behind the 4.0 in my opinion.
Lots of people like Magnaflow, but I personally think it buzzes and pops too much.
OP, I really can't recommend the Dynomax cat-back enough. It's not very loud at first, but after it breaks-in, it's got a nice quiet idle but can growl tastefully when you step on it. It retails for $150, and there is a $50 rebate until June. It performs very well, too. What's not to love? $100 for a quality, good sounding, good performing cat-back. It's not stainless, but the aluminized steel was still in fantastic shape after two Wisconsin winters at the time I sold my 96. My current XJ is getting a full stainless exhaust within the next couple weeks, and I'll be using a stainless Flowmaster 50 Delta.

I have super 44 on my crawler. At first I thought it sounded cool but after a while I think it's stupid. I'm looking to put the most quiets muffler I can find when I do 2.5 exhaust. Don't wanna anyone to heard when I sneak into places. Ha

Walker Quietflow and a spun high flow cat from performacecurve. I tried a couple glass packs and a Thrush welded (Flowmaster clone) and they were too ricey for my taste. If you want a deeper tone go 2.5" but you may take a slight performance hit. I like it with the Walker and cat. Has a little rumble at idle and light throttle and not too loud when on it.
