Need help, installing a 00 4.0 into my 99, can I keep the cool packs
so my 99's 4.0L started making lower end noise, I've been looking to replace it and found a great deal on a 00 XJ with only 80k on it. Is it possible to just swap the 4.0 into my 99 and use the coil pack system instead of the distributor??
I'm definitely gonna check the warranty time, I bought it from a family friend. He had the motor installed then a tree fell on the roof. So I'm swapping the driveline out, my 99 has 188k on everything, this 00 has 15k on motor and 80k on transmission.
I just would like to keep the coil packs bc I feel like it's more efficient.

Long answer: You probably could, but it wouldn't be worth the time. Your '99's computer is looking for a distributor to control spark. It won't be able to control the coil pack without a distributor. So you would also have to get the '00's computer, and then all the crap that goes with it, including the emissions junk and possibly the wiring harness.
I haven't done it myself, but I believe the better option is to strip the '00 down to the long block, then use your '99 peripherals. I think you can swap the distributor over to hole in the '00 block where the oil pump drive and cam sensor are. I would also reuse the '99 exhaust manifold so that you don't have to deal with trying to alter the 2000 exhaust to fit. The exhaust ports on the 0331 head are smaller than on the 0630, so you will need to look out for exhaust leaks and may need to experiment with which manifold gasket works best to avoid them.
