need help with gear checking axle gear ratios
I am trying to determine if I have matching axle ratios without pulling the covers and counting teeth. The rear axle seems to have a limited slip (both wheels turn forward while jacked up). The front axle is open.
R) axle, 1 turn of the wheel = just little over 4 turns of the drive shaft.
F) axle, 1 turn of the wheel = 2.00 turns of the drive shaft.
Is the procedure the same for an open diff as it is for a LS? Should I be checking with the transfer case in 2wd or 4wd?
I checked the front with both wheels in the air as well as one on the ground. Both had same results. I also check with the transfer case in 4 HI ( 1/2 turn in the rear wheel produced 1 full turn of the front wheel)
Is this the way things should be or does something need to be re geared?

Sounds like they are the same ratio, IF and the key word is IF you have an LSD in the rear. And, it sounds like you do. Read this :

huh, that doesnt sound right. If its really a problem, just pull the covers and look at the number son the ring gear. it will be stamped with ring and pinion counts.
There is no axle that came with anthing in the 2:1 ratio range, so thats a bit perculiar.
Its not worth guessing if you think theres a problem though. Pull the covers and make sure. its not like its a big job

Thanks everyone for the info. I didn't realize that you had to double the # of turns on the open diff. It looks like everything is good to go.
The Rear tag is still there and says 3.07. Not quite sure why they would put that back on after a gear swap but then again I am not sure why they did half the stuff they did on this Jeep.
