I have a (currently) STOCK Jeep that has just under 245,000 miles. I will eventually get one of those long arm 8" lifts from IRC, and probably put some 32 or 33" tires on it from there.
My Current issue is this:
As I'm going down the road(paved... and rather smooth), either the Tranny or transfer case occasionally feels like it skipps a beat. Once it starts, it will happen every couple miles Unless I keep the power on it. Is there any easy way to figure out what part is going out?
I see the writing on the wall, and KNOW its going to be a replacement. Keeping in mind the additions that I will be puttin g on in the next few months, what tranny/transfer case should I go with
Currently I've got the 6cyl with 4x4(only High Works).

what does it do exactly. does it feel like it goes into neutral? does it feel like it binds? try and explain a little of what it really feels like.
also IMO 8" lift is huge, especially if you only plan on running 32-33" tire. you only need 4-5" for that and youll keep all 4 on the ground

i had a similar problem when i first bought my xj and it turned out to be the brake switch on the brake pedal. if the switch is activated via, mis adjustment then the tranny tc will unlock and feel like a down shift. If the transfer case was popping out and back in i think there would be some grinding especially on acceleration. Could also be a solenoid in the tranny going out. a search will give you the testing procedure.

It feels like it goes into neutral for a second.. then picks up where it left off. It does not bind, rub, or make any other noise that I can tell...
If it were truely living... I'd just say that it has brainfarts.

Hmmm. Might not be tranny at-all. Ignition system skipping a beat while at-speed and under power may give one the impression that the tranny slipped momentarily.
If it slipped into neutral while your foot is on the throttle then your RPMs would jump.

my 94 5.2 grand did that right at 45, at the point where ti should of been shifting to overdrive. It only did it if i was light on the throttle (crusing). I decided to live with it. A few weeks later I decided to replace the o2 sensor, considering it had 200k on it. Well it went away. Cant tell u how it fixed it, but it fixed it.

Hmmm o2 sensor... Will do that tomorrow. Its getting worse. Yes, it Definately IS going into Neutral. I see the RPMs jump rather quickly. Course, it is STILL a Great Off road vehicle, but only having one vehicle for the family makes this one NEED to work both on and off road. I WAS saving for the Lift kit...
The Spark Plugs were changed a month or two ago. along with the cap and rotor assy.

1)
I dropped something on the road...
2)
This was the rear yoke... Needless to say, $1880 later, the jeep is going again. I would have done all the work myself, but not having a Covered work area prevented me from being able to do this all myself. Luckily, the shop down the street was able to do ALOT of work.
On another note, its ALOT quieter now. If you've ever had an axle drop at 70 MPH, it beats the **** out of everything. Luckily, it was the joint right AT the rear axle, and we were able to stop.

Ohh, and that DID include 2 NEW Axles and associated parts as well. The Transfer case was in good shape, so it just got re-sealed(found a leak).
As our mechanic says, I'm one of the exception that will take a vehicle out and actually use it to its designed limits. My wife comments that I'll take it PAST those limits though.
