I have a rockhard rear bumper with the tire carrier and 2in hitch. I plan on getting a motorcycle carrier and dual sport bike within the next month. Since the spare is in the way I'll probably have to get a 18in extension to mount the bike carrier. Will the weight of the bike be to much for the extension? Probably gonna get a 250 so will weigh a few hundo lbs. Bumper mounts to unibody rail and stock mounting points

Get a small bike trailer. much mre practicle than 500lbs of bike hang 3 feet off the rear of your rig.

I'm living on campus with 1 parking spot so it needs to be on the jeep. Plus I'd love to take a bike with on wheeling tripsOriginally Posted by 93gc40

It might fit on there without an extension, depending on what size spare you've got on the back(as well as how far the spare is from the liftgate). Also, you shouldn't have a problem with weight, especially with a smaller bike. For example, my 650 street/trail weighs 360-370lbs, so a 250 probably wouldn't weigh more than 300lbs max.
Maybe get some measurements for the rack and bike you're looking at and find out for sure if it'll fit.

I wouldn't want 300#+ hanging off my hitch, and particuarly far enough out to clear handlebars and the spare tire. Torque = force x distance. 300# MC x 1.5' = 450'/# applied to your frame in a stationary state. Imagine how that number increases after you've hit a bump. Have you looked at the frame rails on a unit body?

how much weight do you think is hanging off the hi lift on the rear bumper when you lift it up... you know the same bumper that attaches to those bolts..Originally Posted by excess650

I'm 1500miles from my jeep on an internship but I have no doubt it will need an extension the hitch is tucked in and tire carrier is high and sticks out. I'm confident the bumper will hold the bike, but it's the extension I'm worried about. I would weld some braces in place but it needs to come off when I'm wheeling.

If the bumper is tied into the frame rails then I would say your good to go but if you just have the 4 bolts on each side, then you need to tie the bumper into the frame.

^what he said.
or get a hitch installed.
a friend had a carrier on her tj rubicon for a while with a 650 enduro and it rode fine, but it had a real frame.
there are also carriers that hold the front wheel on and the rear rolls on the ground like a trailer. maybe that will be better suited??

Keep in mind a stock hitch is only rated for 500 lbs tongue weight which means that is the Max weight the hitch can support by itself. A motorcycle rack I wouldn't have a problem with. In fact many in Ohio and other states get them to avoid the extra road tax associated with having to register non commercial trailers.
I dont like hitch extensions... just another weak point IMO. With the proper hitch and frame tie in you should be fine with the spare or bike.... but IMO probably not both.

Trailer like this..http://www.discount-trailers.com/fol...le-trailer.htm Folds into a space really no bigger than the tires. My dad has one, that I use some times. Course when I use it with the jeep I mount 31" tires, for added ground clearance. He runs the 12" tires, cause he pulls it with his 350Z.
The bumper has a built in hitch but it sits nearly flush with the hatch and the bumper has a tire carrier. Can't have a trailer because I have one parking spot. All I'm really needing to know is can a hitch extension hold the weight of the bike. Probably 18in extension. Thanks

.
good luck,, strap a chain on your bike for when it hopefully doesn't break the unit body ,or tear the bumper out of it.
