has anyone midified a universal hitch like this one (borrowed pic off another member)? i dont like that it sits too low and i wouldnt mind cutting into the stock bumper if i have to. does any one have any pics on this modification?

 

Yes. I had the same hitch on my previous xj. I unbolted the middle section and flipped it upside down. Had to trim the bumper a little.

I installed mine quite a few years ago, the mounts mounted right to the unibody, but I remember I had to cut to hitch to get it to fit and bolt to the mounts

 

Will cutting the hitch make it weaker?

 

I haul my 17ft boat with it all the time, and never have had any problems. I just cut off the top part of the hitch so it didn't sit down so far. That way I could bolt it in the top holes of the bracket, it still has three bolts on both sides holding it to the brackets.

 

Cutting it tonight! Like the way it looks.

 

Mine is a Reese that is made for the XJ. It mounts up pretty close.

 

I don't remember the brand of mine but it is even closer than that.

I have this curt hitch. It's pretty close to the bumper too
