so maybe someone more mechanically inclined could answer this question for me. I've got a 99 xj w/ 4" lift that seems to be making a very audible noise when turning the wheel in drive (2wd) and no noise when driving straight. when I'm in 4wd low it makes the same noise, when yet when I turn the wheel it won't drive at all. I have to straighten the wheel and back up for it to go forward again. It sounds like its coming from the front of the vehicle maybe the front diff or somewhere just behind it but definitely no further back than the transfer case. I hope i explained it all correctly and that someone can help me out, it doesn't affect driving in 2wd at all but I can't really drive it in 4wd and that's no fun.

 

I'd start with pulling both front axle shafts & assuming one isn't broken go from there.If it still does it, pull the front cover & inspect the ring gear & look for metal shavings & chunks of metal.

 

I was hoping to not have to go through the hassle of pulling my axle shafts but that does make sense so I'll take a look at them, thanks for the advice

On a side note. You can't run the unit bearings with the weight of the XJ on them without stub shafts in them, it will ruin them. Put the jeep on jackstands or install the stubs.

 

Did you replace the trackbar when you did the lift ?
