Well from what I understand, they only use manual locking hubs when you use an electronic switch to engage the 4wd, so if the switch fails you can still lock it in, however with the XJ it is a manual lever that goes directly to the transfer case, which leaves no point for factory manual locking hubs

There are 2 company's that sell a manual locking hub kit for the Jeep XJ D30 that I know of, Warn and Mile Marker, as in the winch people. The problem is nobody has developed one that they will sell for a decent price.

To answer your question, the elimination of hubs was so you could have shift on the fly 4WD without getting out of the vehicle, cheaper production costs with the unit bearing and conservation of tooling at the factory so you could use the same hubs with full time or part time vehicles. That being said, you are looking at a number of new parts, all of which are machined in smaller quantities. You might want to look into the Bronco II hubs. I am pretty sure they will convert over off that D30 front end. But be warned, those hubs and so forth are not the parts used on the early D30 which would take a real beating. They are not all that strong, and as Frank mentioned, should not be used on anything larger than a 33" tire.

I read an article in a magazine that shows the mile marker kit and it says "when the factory jeep unit bearing fails, the conversion kit offers ease of maintenance, a much smoother ride, better steering control, greater fuel economy, and longer axle and driveshaft life." And I beleive being able to disengage your hubs would allow you to have a spool in the front so when offroad you can have it basicly locked with the hubs also locked, but when on road disengage the hubs and it will drive with no effect of the spool. I beleive. If I had the money I would probably do the conversion. But I just remembered spools are not compatible with axles held in by a c clip like our dana 30's and 35's.

Quadratec lists this

There may be more out there, but I didn't look after seeing the price.

MIle marker, Warn, and ruggged ridge make a kit to adapt locking hubs to your rig.
Reid Racing makes a knuckle to adapt the older style locking hubs as well. That means you will have to buy spindles, brake backing plates, bearings inner and outer, calipers and hub and rotor. For the amount of money it would cost to do this mod you are approaching the cost of swapping in a waggy d44 with a truss, and regearing. UNless you have all the "other part" to do the knuckle swap it really isnt worth it.
