A 4bt is around 1200 bucks up plus the swap parts needed. Its big and heavy same weight as a big block chevy. The better diesel swap would be a vw diesel they are small and weight less then the stock inline 6 does.

As long as my name is on the title, I'll put any engine I want in it. And I have a Chevy in a Chevy right now anyway, an '04 Avalanche. Since Chevy didn't make a Cherokee, and Chrysler/Jeep didn't make an LS (or anything comparable - Hemi won't fit, LA/Magnum would cost a fortune to make the same power as an LS, and a 4BT Cummins would cost more and be more involved than an LS swap, for worse results) I'll just have to pick the best of both worlds.

Not just longevity - LSx motors start making power where other engines leave off. A cam swap and tune puts an otherwise stock 5.3 into power levels that would cost thousands on other engines.

As long as your name is on your title, do what you want with it. I want a V8 XJ. A Hemi won't fit (those engines are W I D E). An LA-based engine would cost a fortune to build, plus another fortune to install since it has little to no aftermarket support (when compared to LS engines).

And besides, it's not like XJ's have never had Chevy engines in them. The 2.8 in 84-86 models was a Chevy engine.

I believe the 231C is clocked further up.

The 233C is the electronic shift case. It's good for a wide chain and main shaft drive sprocket in certain years.

Ok, that makes sense. I was thinking it was something along those lines...

Do the LS swap don't listen to the nay sayers. They doubtedly have little if Any exp in what is an is not a good power plant. Speaking from my 28+ year career in the auto field I can assure you the ls platform is by far the best American v8 FFS hot rod shoved over 1k hp turbo through a S T O C K 4.3 truck engine and could not blow it up. don't believe me oh naysayers? http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/...?__federated=1
The tq of og sbc vs new gen 3? umm a 60 will pound a 350 to death on tq. a 5.3 is 225 cci vs 350 and still eats a 350 stock for stock
The Chrysler/Mercedes crap are known to chuck rods around 150k or less I can vouch for it personally , And the hemi chamber is NOT the best design. Onto tcase. Use the one that came on your pullout. Swap out the shift cam for a manual cam or just wire in the push button. I know you can use the s10 tcase from an early manual shift and get the later 5 bolt to 6 bolt adapter from a jy. I have it on my 97 s10 tcase w 242 planet set 97 Dakota front output shaft & yoke in my 87 chickoree im doing. Why not use the novak? well its way over priced and they make some new 4l60 op shaft with less splines. WTF ? ok make it weaker? any who. Novak does nice work don't get me wrong but going to Hawaii on my ls swap alone I will not stand for. their headers are sanderson lsnovak you can buy for under 400 shipped from sanderson or use holly ls manifolds or Camaro non calif emissions manifolds. the radiator you can squeeze a 22x19x3" alum from wherever. I advise a cross flow w fitting son the right side. u might have to fab your own filler neck and close off the one it has. ( I can tig weld so no big whoop ) save time buy the novak mm kit for 250 shipped. That's worth the price (barley) Im not done with my swap yet. I need a few things still and time.
GL and enjoy the new POWA

lol
ive read your thread several times to prep for my swap and am eternaly gratefull for that info being out there

its funny ive just spent the last hour or so reading about t-case options for the 5.3/4l60e and i come across this thread just browsing CF for a minute

any who, my research has come to using a np231C with a jb conversions shorty SYE with the proper tail cone for the gm vss.

http://www.jbconversions.com/product..._short_sye.php

if i remember right serious's build had a hybrid jeep/chevy 231 with the "C" wide chain and 6 gear planetary stuffed into a "J" case with a "C" SYE and a "tapped" "J" tailcone for the VSS, but it seems a little to frankenstiened to me even tho i believe it worked just fine, there was something about the bolt patterns being different between the cases and the 4l60E

I'm as big of an lsx fanboi as the next guy, but I'd honestly do a 6 cyl atlas swap before the lm7. however, I'm unsure of the height being an issue or not. at least you can deal with the height issues of an lm7. either way, good luck. lsx engines are the next best thing to birth control.

Since we're all second guessing the OP, I would probably do a Buick 3800 supercharger, lots of power, small enough to fit without hacking the frame, junkyards are full of them, etc

TBH I would not do any kind of powerplant swap in an XJ since its so much effort for something that's supposed to be low-cost basic get-around vehicle. Maybe a Wrangler that is just a tub, or a full-size vehicle that needs to be powerful, but XJ is fine with stock I6 IMO
