OK SO I MISSED THE LINE THAT SAYS "THE RING & PINION RELATIONSHIP WILL NOT NEED TO BE RESET IF THE GUIDE IS FOLLOWED" WELL........IT WASNT. SOMEHOW I MISSED THE LINE THAT SAYS TO MARK THE CARRIER/RING GEAR LOCATION SO IT CAN BE PUT BACK THE EXACT SAME PLACES. NOW I HAVE COMPLETED THE WORK ON THE CARRIER AND JUST READ THESE IMPORTANT DETAILS SO IGUESS MY QUESTION IS WHATS NEXT? WILL IT WORK IF I PUT IT IN ? HOW DO I "RESET THE RING & PINION RELATIONSHIP" ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRICIATED, THANKS GUYS!!!....OH YA. 92 XJ 4.0. WORKING ON THE D30 HP

I did not. I removed axles, and then the carrier. I removed the ring gear and then the spider gears, I installed locker into carrier and replaced the ring gear on the carrier, I DIDNOT however mark the carrier and the ring gear to replace exactly where it was

I don't know if it's right or wrong but I have never bolted the ring gear back on in the exact same location. I will check backlash before removal and verify that it is the same on install.

Backlash is that slight movement you have in the ring gear with the pinion stationary. Without a dial indicator and a magnetic base it is next to impossible to check it. If you have kept everything in its proper order and your only concern was just bolting the ring gear back in the exact same holes, you should be okay.

At this point pay someone to come reassemble it for you before you screw it up and end up costing yourself a lot more money. Some things are not meant to be a beginners starting project, as knowledge and special tool come into play to get the job done, same for engine work/rebuilding.

The carrier shims should be behind the carrier bearings that are pressed on, so I'm not sure how they could of fallen off. Maybe your talking about the bearing races? You should be good bolting it all back up as it came off even if your ring gear isn't bolted back on in the exact same spot it was removed.

This is your front differential right? If so I'd just put the thing back together, put the shims where they came from. It's not like the front is used 95% of the time.
I'm sure others will disagree but that's what I would do.
If things are THAT far out of whack *which is near impossible with just ring gear / carrier mis alignment you should feel it when you spin the pinion by hand and or hear it when you use the front axle.
Used front axle assemblies aren't terribly expensive for our rigs anyways.
*just noticed you're a local. hi!*

Great...........................Now we've got (2) Firehawks on here!
Actually, the ring gear spins the pinion gear and the driveshaft anytime you are moving.......................So they are always "Engaged"
However, OP you should be alright as long as you didn't change the bearings, or mix up any of the shims................
Really the only thing that could affect your backlash would be if your carrier and/or ring gear had excessive runout.............
Since your ring gear has "Worn" in the same position on the carrier for it's entire life, and you have now changed it's position on the carrier...........It may change the wear pattern by a very slight amount..............
If it really worries you to the point where you'll lose sleep over it, get a cheap dial gauge and magnetic base from Harbor Freight. Google info on how to check backlash (it is super easy), and check it in 3 or 4 positions around the ring gear....................
