I want to add some extra lights to my Jeep, but I'm wondering about the best position for them. My last Jeep had a brush guard and the lights were mounted to that, but I've seen roof mounts, A pillar, and more so what position in cherokeeforum.com's esteemed opinion provides the best option for extra light?

 

The stock bumper has holes on top for auxiliary lights. LED pods could mount there. I used them to hang an LED bar inside bumper.

Roof lights create glare on hood and windshield, unless they are spot beams.
Pillar lights get caught on branches.

 

Looks good, Steve. I have a couple pods lying around, was thinking of mounting them inside the bumper as well. Got any close-up pics?

Had a 21" on the front when I had stock bumpers, then I got aftermarket bumpers and moved it to the back of my roof rack then put a 32" curved lightbar on the front of my roof rack.

 

This. My height makes it difficult to perform with the little girls in my tap class.

 

My reason for an LED is the pure white light that spreads out on the periphery and the intense light that projects forward. I have Silverstars and aftermarket harness, but the yellow color of sand seems to absorb all of the headlight output making them almost useless.
And on these unlit 12 mile stretches of road through wildlife refuges, the extra output is great, allowing me to watch out for animals and eye-shine much better and with a greater field of view.

 

In my case and where I off road at in National Forests and private land 12,000ac. this works best for me. I do have rear rack mounted lights as well for backup/work light. My rack lights are sit back far enough that I have no glare off of the hood at all.

 

what kind of diff cover is that?

 

One of the things I was wondering as I kind of assumed there would be a certain amount of useleness/glare from roof mounted lights is if I moved my roof rack far enough forward or used JCR's pre-runner rack would that mitigate this somewhat. If I'm understanding correctly though, according to SteveMongr that won't be the case?

 

On my last Xj I had pods using the factory fog holes, a 20" cut in the bumper, and a 42" on the roof. The roof bar had some glare, but not a lot since it was about 6" back on the roof.

 

It's a good thing you don't require auxiliary lighting to:
reverse or hitch a trailer
cross obstacles
need alley lights for L/R vision
etc, etc...

 

If your rack is moved back far enough there is no glare on the hood, but with any lights mounted that high they are useless in snow, heavy rain dusty conditions. A lot of the time my uppers are turned to the sides a little when needed.

 

I can't remember the brand now but very HD Cast and polished with ribs and a lower drain. Seems like it was just under $200 for it and says JEEP on it.
