over the years ive hand a handful of XJ's with over 250,000 miles on each of them (including my current one at 260,000) and they've all ran at 210-215.

id say the engine longevity is just fine. 210 is exactly what these motors need

It's not about seeing numbers drop in coolant temp. Its all about taking heat off the motor. I did this to cool my engine bay, I can now open my hood and not feel like Im burning my hand off, the hood is cooler to the touch as well. That means less heat on all the wires, the boots, the tubes, seals, paint, plus I think the vents gave it a meaner look.
I know they work because I can see the heat rising out. Its again not a big jump might be a few degrees coolant wise.

thats fine to do.

but, i do see quite a few people on here using vents and spacers in an attempt to have lower operating temps and try to stop overheating...which just isnt the right way to do it

Default Lifting The hood

I lifted my hood this summer with some washers and longer bolts. Took all but 20 minutes and cost about 7 bucks. Do it if you want and then if you don't like it take it off. I love my raised hood and it did help keping the temps cooler under the hood. Even if you don't see any difference on the gauge the temps under the hood are cooler, obviously ,which is good. If anyone has proof of an actual decapitation because of this I will gladly remove the spacers for safety. It has never happened and if it does its not because of the spacers. Also it would be rather weird for both sides of the hood to let go at the same exact time and go up at the same exact angle and the same exact second to go through the windshield. Just my opinion mixed in with common sence.

I'll bring this one back from the dead, just lifted the back of the hood. I had a box of washers and bolts laying around that I didn't need so I did it. I like the way it looks, but I don't see a difference in the temp. I only did it for something to do while I was drinking a few beers I may keep it I may put it back. For now ill leave it until see a negative like water getting in to something or the windshield fogging up.

I've had mine raised for yrs. No negatives to date. You won't notice a drop in engine temp but you will have a drop in underhood temp. Those continued high underhood temps take their toll on components.

A couple years ago I tested the under hood temps with 4 digital display temp sensors placed throughout the engine bay. Tested stock, 1/2" and 1" lift. Idling, stop-n-go around town, highway and stopped/cool down.
There was definately a lower under hood temp with the 1". 1/2" didn't quite raise it above the rubber seal.
No noise, no fogging up the window and no decapitation.
Looks, IDK but I am ok with them. I do get a few old ladies who see it and tell me my hood is not closed all the way and I just 'thank them'.
It really helps in the underhood temps when idling, crawling, and especially with heatsoak after shutting down.
Regular washers and bolts corrode. $7
SS is expensive. $20
All 3 of my XJs have this hood lift done.
The last one I used these- $25

Thanks for the info, I have only had it up for a few days but I have had a few people tell me my hood was open i get a laugh out of it. I do feel heat escaping through the gap so It must be dong something. And my 3 year old son says its a race Jeep now so if he likes it im keeping it.
