Depending on how much articulaltion you are after, if you don't need alot of travel, you can pick up take off's from a Wrangler Rubicon off craigslist for around $25 which will net you another 2-3" of travel. Otherwise you should get a set meant for a 3" for around $100-150.

Stock shocks are basically maxed out at 3 inches. Get jk shocks if you have to..or just save your pennies for some shocks of the correct length

Maybe if you just want to drive it to work and hit no pot holes then yes for a while until you get the proper set up, or get those sketchy blocks that raise the shock

I just picked up used JK unlimited sport shocks off craiglist that literally had under 500 miles on them for $50. The rubicons are a bit longer and they will allow you to go 3". I'm not sure if the JK sport shocks would let you go 3".
I'm going to put 2" Old man EMU leaf springs on the rear (originals are sagging bad) and spacers in the front. So the leaf springs are going to be about $250, kind of expensive but really only about $50 more tham OEM replacements.
I'm in the same boat as you--wife, 2 kids, hound dog, mortgage....you know the drill
