I am having the same Problam. Im looking at Zone lifts insted. After talking to a bunch of people however I am leaning towards a 3in kit. with the idea that i can pop a 1.5in coil spacer and Shackel relocation brackets down the road if i want to go higher. ( I have been told this will not negtavly afect flex or ride.)

I have a 2000 xj 4x4 automatic w/ a RC 4.5 in lift and LOVE it so far. I was debating a 2 or 3 in then at the last minute went with a 4.5. I seen pics of 3's and they barely looked lifted imo. I have lil to no vibrations. Go with the spring pack too n not the add a leaf. U won't regret it.

I'm about 80% done with a 4.5" RC X kit and 31" BFG KM2's

It sits alot taller than I thought it would....lol

It looks great and the kit went on nice.

This should be less of a question about how much (3" or 4.5") and more about how the vehicle will be used. There can be a big difference between looking tough and being tough.

Depending on what order you buy them, a lift can determin with size tire you should get or the size tire will determin what size lift will be needed. Make a decision about either of those and the other will figure itself out.

I like the idea of going low, but not just for the reasons ktmracer pointed out, but because it's more challanging when you're off road. Where's the fun in just crawling through and obstacal just to say "okay, what's next?" when you could barely make it through something and be saying "holy ***, did we just do that with a budget boost and 31's?". But that's just me, thrill seeker with no money...

Go 4.5". Its the perfect height for an xj can even go with 35s with some bump stops

Well, at 3" you are at a safe point as far as not having to change to much. Once you go bigger, you have more issues with brake lines, drive shaft angles, trackbars ect ect... on the other hand, I personally think 33" on a 3" lift looks silly. but on the other hand lower center of gravity..... ahhhh crap, I don't know. LOL

Go with a 3" kit that has high spring rates and you'll net more than 3" of lift. A rubicon express 3.5" lift kit gives way more lift than most 4.5" kits on the market. My skyjacker lift gave me more like 3.5"-4" because it has really stiff springs. And like it's been said, the less the lift, the less parts you have to change out. You can fit really any size tires (up to 35-37) on a 3" lift with trimming and bumpstopping. Anyone who says lift higher simply doesn't understand LCOG and proper bumpstopping.

Unless your building a "mudder", then you're on your own.

3" lift for dd is a good height, but im close to 4" now because i just wanted a little more height

heres 3" on 31's with no bumpstops or extended lines...

i can hang with the big guys offroad, its more the driver than the rig

overall, it all comes down to how much $$$$ you wanna spend and how much time you wanna sink into it

I would figure out what you are going to do with the jeep like others have said. If its just for looks you don't need to spend alot to accomplish that. Mud trucks need height but what most other wheeling requires is articulation.

like i said mine will be mainly a on road DD in the winter and summer when its crappy and I want to leave my malibu in the garage. I do like the looks of 4.5 on a xj. ive seen 3s that look stock. i looked at RE kits and i like how high the 3.5s sit but they dont come with shocks and the are pricy.i guess i could run RC shocks with that kit....i will have to look into bumpstops im not to familiar with that. i was looking to run the 4.5 kit with 265 16s or 285s.
