Arrow lets all clear this up...

im installing a full SYE into my np231 on my 98xj w/ c8.25 rear axle..i also plan on using a stock front driveshaft (double cardan) from a auto 4.0 XJ as the rear driveshaft after the sye install. now iv had a couple people ask me if im going to be installin a h&t sye since im gonna be using a stock XJ ds..why? does a stock xj front ds not work with a full SYE? iv got a RE3.5 lift installed and plan on doing my SYE saturday

Yes, it'll work with both. The Tom Woods double cardan shaft that I run looks EXACTLY like a stock shaft with nicer parts.

What does that mean "nicer parts"? Are they stronger? Or just new?

I used a stock front DS. But because I have a 5-speed tranny it was too short so I had it lengthen to fit (and all new u-joints installed and rebalanced) so total was about the same as a Tom Woods, but shipping to Hawaii would have killed me, and local shop did it all in 1 day!

Got my SYE & Driveshaft from Jeep Hut on here in Vendor section. The Drive shaft is a Tatton or Tallon (don't remember). Their pricing was really good & it's a lot stronger & HD versus running a Stock fornt driave shaft. I know they are strong, but they look really weak...

you could've also found a zj driveshaft because they are longer. there used to be a list floating around here somewhere..

bingo. I'm pretty sure those are front shaft lengths

so how much inches over stock will the driveshaft be if you use the front from an auto, along with an SYE?

The TW shafts are much beefier when beside a stock shaft.

I've broken 4 joints in stock shafts and 1 joint in a TWs shaft. When the stock shaft joints break it takes out the ears and the shaft is done. When the joint in the TWs shaft broke I just put a new joint in it on the trail and kept rolling. Plus, their warranty is awesome.

length difference between a stock front and read ds? not exactly sure. but the main reason stock front driveshafts are used in the rear is because its alot cheaper than a new aftermarket shaft and the fact that its a 2piece double cardan driveshaft unlike the stock rear thats fixed

Buy a TW or Like brand shaft, the front DS was never meant to be a rear shaft let alone one to propel a jeep with larger than stock tires on it. avoid the problems in the future and get something thats meant to do the job.

If you do cheap and half *** things you should only expect cheap and half *** results...

While I would usually completely agree with this statement, in many other situations, I feel that using a stock front driveshaft for the rear with an SYE is acceptable. Yes, an aftermarket shaft would be far superior. Yes, I suggest you get one. But if money is tight and you need a shaft then a front shaft will work just fine. It'll see the same forces that it sees up front.

I ran a stock shaft up front for a long, long time before the Tom Woods shaft went in.
