Triangulated 4 link coil rear end and 3 link front. Full width axles, tub the rear, chop front fenders out. Build shock hoops into the engine bay and cargo area with huge oversized shocks. Otk steering, 3" lift with like 38's. decent up travel, crazy down travel.
Sorry, I just went on a tangent of my dream XJ.. Haha

Wider track width, low ride height, shocks with decent travel.
Angle the shocks, I have 16 inches of travel in the rear on 12 inch stroke shocks on my xj.
Keeping it low should be the priority, low with up travel is the key, getting both is close to impossible though.

Not keep the stock axles.. Lighten up the top end. Basically build a buggy that's where all the true low cog crawlers end up. Lower is better but pursuing lowcog when you've still got stock axles and inner fenders is futile. So in fact I wouldn't build a low cog XJ. I'd build a 4.5" on 35's rig just like everyone else. It just plain works
Break that, then you can start thinking full width and low cog

Gotta agree with the 2 previous post, My XJ was on 3.5" and 35's for a few months before I started having transmission issues due to stock gears so it's back on 33's until I regear. Then it'll have 35's again. But it would go the same places as buddy's with much taller jeeps and was more stable then them when off camber
