They will break off. I'd only do it in an emergency and only if there was no other solution and feared being eaten by dingoes awaiting a replacement u-bolt.

You will DESTROY the spring if you do this. The heat will kill the spring and it will break, most likely when you are traveling down the road at a high rate if speed. Extremely horrible idea.

IF it were possible to weld the bottom leaf to the perch, what about the rest of the leafs? I don't think the center-pin will hold them together for long.

NO, Do not do this ever for your safety and others.
When you heat metal, it weakens. By welding on an already heat treated spring, you weaken it and risk snapping it. Trust me, a broken spring is not a pretty site due to all the released potential energy it stored. Basically it now becomes a high powered projectile to which the flimsy sheet metal of your Jeep is no match or shielding from.

Was just asking and trust me ive seen one snap, happened in my old f100 as I was drifting it across a buddies feild.. thing went flying found it a feild over.....
