Default just bought a xj, help me out

it was time to get rid of the truck, had a '94 f150 threw a small lift on it with 32s but the ttb in the front constantly needed alignment pain in the ***

just bought a '98 with the ax15 has a 3" bds lift already installed and is running 32s. i know a little about xjs but not much. im just wondering if the stock 3.07s are good enough for the 32s or if i need to go to 4.10s? this is my daily driver so i need descent gas mileage, but i also want to be able to take it on some trails, it wasnt fun taking the truck to rausch creek ha

any input would be great to add on to this xj to improve it for daily driving and off road ability

thanks
mike

i would imaging the 3.07s are a bit of a ***** with the 32s, i know with my auto and 3.55s the 32s were a ***** as far as power and MPG went, 4.10s would be a noticable upgrade while still keeping it good as a DD, however the second question to ask is....Do you ever plan to go bigger than 32s?

Its not ideal but its do able. I usually run 31's and hate it, but when I go mudding I run 32's and it is even worse. I plan on going with 4.10's down the road because gas mileage is killer right now.

My old setup in my TJ was D30/35 with 3.07, open/open on 33s. Thankfully it was a stick, but 4th and 5th gear were useless.
If you want anything over 31s, plan to regear.

As for 4.10s, again it comes down to what you can live with. 33s on 4.10s isn't too bad in my experience. Anything bigger, I'd go 4.88 or 4.56.

hope this helps...

35's is the tallest tire you can safely go on stock axels (general preception) and to have similar to stock gearing youll need to regear to 4.88's

33's 4.56 (with your current lift you can run up to 33's, may require more backspacing (4.5-5) and trimming)

and 31's 4.10

and get some good tires. dont be cheap. theyll last longer and ride better, improving MPGs

With the 31's I get around 13 city and 15 highway. And if I get lazy and leave the 32's on I get 10-12 city and 13 highway. Of course you may bet a little better, as I need to replace the bearings in the front and rear of mine. And yes im running 3.07's.

You have a manual so you do not need to gear nearly as bad as most. I have a 5 speed also, and I just took axles from an auto cherokee and swapped them in, took me from 3.07 to 3.55 and made it perfect for me with 31's. Im sure it would be fine with 33's also. With a manual, 4.10's and 33's is equal to stock gearing.

I have 4.10s, 31s, and the AX 15 and I get about 15 mpg daily driving it mostly around town. I generally shift between 1800-2000 rpm though, and sometimes just shift first to third. Waiting to install my new speedo gear to make sure my estimates are accurate, but going off of mile markers vs. odometer, I think I'm pretty close.. as a reference I was getting 17-18 mpg steadily with 3.07s and 31s.

33s arent too off when under 40 but at 60mph im going 70-75mph so its off enough to mess with mpg calculations. people dont always think about it.

I had trouble running my Cherokee with AX15 and 3.07s with stock tires, the gears were way to tall for any trail use. I now have 35s with 4.88s and it does great on the trails and is ok on the roads. I have gotten 13.8 mpg with a mix of trails in 4x4 hi and low and about half on road driving. My Cherokee isn't used as a DD so I have no all highway mileage data, but from what I'm getting doing trails and roads I would think that 15-16 mph would be doable.

how much of a pain is it to swap out gears ? how do you like 4.88s with 35s ? im thinking of just swaping them now for the better mileage with my 265s
