99 xj 4.5" lift...I get a wobble that starts around 37 mph and smooths out around 43 mph....have a new jks track bar, steeringstabilizer on. I have serious off road utk steering kit on the way alo ng with control arms. ...i did notice the shaft coming out the gear box that connects to the pitman arm is moving around...was wondering if it was supposed to have that play or not

 

Side to side as the wheel is moved back and forth?

Death wobble occurs when you hit poles, go over rail road tracks, or other bumps.

If you're just driving down a straight flat road and you get a wobble you can drive through, you then you probably have a tire balance problem.

I had onset of death wobble from a slightly worn tie rod end.

 

Tires and wheels are about a month old and were balanced

 

Are you still running the stock steering rack?

 

I was waiting for the answer to your question if the steering box moving side to side as well as left and right can cause your small wobble. I have the same thing, at 50MPH my steering wheel starts to shake and the car vibrates, but only at 50...if I go slower or faster no problem. sounds like your sistuation. I crawled under my steering box as my wife shook my steering wheel back and forth and I can see small amount of Lateral movement as is is rotating back and forth. so I too would like to know if that is a problem and could cause a small shake or vibration at a certain speed. I hope you get an answer as I am following your thread.

 

You didn't give any info about lift etc...but if you are lifted I would:

You should inspect your frame around the box for cracks, the bolts holding it to the frame for tightness. There is a steering box brace available, but you want to make sure the frame is not cracked before you install it. Also validate that your tie rod ends are good and aren't causing that motion. Most vibrations going down the road are balance issues, so check your balance as well. If you are lifted be sure you go to a shop that is familiar with lifted vehicles.

 

Ordered 1 ton kit from serious off road,should be here thursday....but won't be able to install until Tuesday , I'll crawl underneath tomorrow after work and inspect for cracks

 

Ha d a similar problem, but would only wobble when I hit a bump @65+. I took it to a shop and they said the pitman arm needed replacing along with ball joints. Or so they said. When I got home, my friend & I checked out the front end, only to find that the steering box was loose, one bolt was barely finger tight, 2 others were loose enough for 3 good turns w a wrench. Turns out that the prior owner had a shop install a new steering box, PS pump & pit man arm prior to my purchasing the XJ, but had failed to check their work and tighten the bolts. Just goes to show you can't be too safe.

 

Still didnt get a chance to check everything out by the gearbox...will definitely check it out today...hd steering kit should be hear today and should have it painted and installed by next week, will order new ball joints next weekend just because its one less think i would have to worry about later. Control arms shoulf be done in 2 weeks. Before I forget thanks for everyones input

 

DW can be caused by ball joints, tie rods, control arms, out of balance tires..... do not ever let anyone tell you to replace your steering stabilizer. That is never ever the culprit
