How can I tell without removing the rear-end cover if a chrysler 8.25 has a locker/limited slip or not. I am looking for a bolt in replacement for my current open 8.25 rearend from a junkyard but don't want to spend the time tearing off all the covers, collecting all the oil etc.

Also, is there a surefire way of finding out if a rearend is still in good shape or destroyed just through visual inspection?

 

Spin a rear wheel, if they other side turn in the same direction, LSD or Locker. If the other side spins in the Opposite direction OPEN. Very few 8.25's had LSD, but they do exist.

If you know what to look for Visual INTERNAL inspection will do fine.

 

Most JY have to drain all fluids from a vehicle before they go on the lot, so you will find they have drilled holes in the diff covers! (that what a lot of my local yards do)

Your gonna want to pull the cover off to check the gears & to see if it has a LSD or not. You might get lucky & find one with the label still on the pass. side axle tube!

 

Correct spinning the wheels is the easiest way to find an LSD odds are you won't find a locker in the JY! Still pull the cover off to inspect the gears...
