Default Jeep XJ lockers

I'm new to the Jeeping world, I drive a 99 xj and I want to throw some lockers on the back. What is the easiest way to know what, and what size to buy?

Identify what rear axle you have and what style locker you want to go with. If you know the axle then its pretty easy to get the right size. Chances are you have a Chrysler 8.25 so it will be the 29 spline version. A lunch box locker like Spartan or Aussie would be the cheapest easiest locker. Do some internet searching and you will find gobs on info on the subject.

Research, find out what axles you have, and research some more. You could have a LSD in the rear in which case you could throw a Spartan locker in the front and be twice as capable.

Haha.. Chances are you'll only need one locker for the rear. As stated, you need to know what axle you have so you can buy a locker designed for that axle. After that you'll want to decide on going cheaper with a lunchbox locker or go expensive with an air or electronic locker.

Research! http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locking_differential

Is there a reason you want it in the back? I put a lunchbox in the front and think I like it more than I would if it were in the back

For me, I would find it more useful in the rear. Being my daily driver, it's convenient to be able to have the rear utilize its full potential grip, it's Vermont, roads are either snowy or gravely or poorly maintained. So many times I've encountered situations where the one tire fire has caused me to have to adjust my driving in some way. This also allows me to utilize my locker without shifting into 4wd. Another reason, for me, is that on our snowy roads, a locked front end can severely compromise steering control. If you are aware of it, you can easily adjust, but, in "emergency situations" it will lessen control. However, you do generate more grip by pulling (front locker), rather than pushing (rear locker).. That's my two Lincoln's..

Having a locker in either diff will require different driving styles. You will be more prone to over steer witha rear locker, prone to more under steer WHILE IN 4WD with a front locker.

You should notice little to no difference with a front locker in 2wd.

honestly... i would consider a front locker first so that you get used to using it while in four wheel... like it was stated you will have to change your driving style if you have a locker in the rear.

What is the easiest way to identify axels? And what do y'all think of sparten lockers? I have looked into them a little and read some reviews. Any feed back from those who use them?

I have been running a spartan for quite a while now. Very tough in my opinion.

True, but if he has a Chrysler 8.25 in the rear, that's a stronger axle than a D30

I run lock rites front and rear, you won't notice the rear unless you're driving stick.

I have an aussie in the rear of my 98' with the 8.25. For the price ($300), ease of install, and strength its a good choice. One thing you will have to get used to is the CLICKITY CLACK when turning corners.

I have a Aussie in my 8.25 & if I had to do over again I'd put in a Spartan instead of the Aussie just 'cause it's a easier install.
