I personally love the stock mirrors in my 99. I dont know if you would have power mirrors if you got tow mirrors, that would annoy me having the switch but not being able to use it. You would also get the stigma of having tow mirrors on a vehicle that doesnt tow anything besides the lawn mower.
If I ever get around to removing my doors Ill probabably go for mirrors like these, I also think they could look half way decent.

I like the height. But the fact they are so far away from the door, that makes me not like them. But it's yours and you can do what you want.
I just know that you can't haul much, I think a stock xj weighs about 3500 lbs. my parents finally got a "small" 19 foot camper and it still weighs 3500 lbs and I wouldn't dream of pulling it. I'm also a person who goes function over form. Even my dad's dodge ram which gets used hard doesn't have tow mirrors but he's a truck driver and knows how to handle trailers with no problems.
I would suggest against them if they are just for looks. If you want more field of view you may want to try a bubble mirror. Less than 5$ and I think they work great. I've seen them on wranglers for when the doors come off. They help great with blind spots. That's all I can really say.

Im doing it mostly for looks because my jeep is fixing to go on a overhaul by converting it to 4WD. and I want it to look nice.

I give you kudos for doing the challenging and converting to 4wd instead of buying a 4wd and building that. Id wait on the mirrors until you have the lift, tires, lights etc you want. You could always check out Junk Yards and see if there are mirrors you like. Perhaps you may get ideas there.
I think these could look good. Im not sure if you want chrome or what.

I personally would not want it why, the width it adds to the XJ something that no one wants when off road.
Hell the stock ones are way to wide at times and I hate to keep them folded back against the door all the time while on the trail.

Go pick up a set of tow mirrors off of a comanche. They came with 3 different mirror options from the factory and tow mirrors was a fairly common one in some areas.
