how to tell what size dana 30 carrier you have
I plan on regearing my 1998 cherokee, and going from the stock 3.55 ratio to the 4.56, I have been told that the stock carrier that came with my gears will not work with the 4.56 gear ratio, and that I need to find one out of a dana 30 with gears higher then 3.73 I believe. So probably a carrier that had 4.10's now my question is if that is true?
I bought 4.56 gears from a guy and he gave me an extra carrier for the dana 30 he didn't know much about it, my question; is there a way to tell what size the carrier is just by looking at it or if I can measure it and that could possibly tell me if that carrier is different then the one that has the 3.55 gear ratio? Thanks to who ever can help with these questions!

If you stand the carrier up on the non ring gear side it should measure aprox. 4-5/8" to the face that the ring gear bolts up to for a 4 series carrier if my memory serves.
