something like this should satisfy most peoples need for speed, mabey start with something similar and use the rest of the cash to beef up the rest of the jeep

i have but that's more intense than i wanna get, they have flue cells, and 60" of articulation and massive FOX shocks that go through the floor! haha i want it to look stock (minus the nice offorad look) but not behave stock

Quote: I have heard the cylinder walls get awfully thin around the 4.9 mark. Id stick to the tried and true 4.6 If it was my project.

Regardless, $12,000 for an lsx swap?

Have you looked into the truck motors? The 5.3L lm7 puts out decent power and has plenty of potential for cheap. If you wanna spend a bit more you can look into a 6 liter lq9 or lq4.

I'm in the middle of a LQ9 swap and it looks like I'm going to have MUCH less money into the entire swap than your average bare crate stroker longblock, with significantly more power.

Granted I'm bolting it to a chevy transmission, so I don't have an adapter bellhousing to worry about, but that should only be a couple/few hundred bucks more.
yeah there is a company called "Novak Conversions" and they do LS1 and crazy swaps like that for jeeps, but you need to buy a tranny too and a bunch of other stuff and an LS1 with tranny and everything to my door would be 12k...i COULD go to a yard and yank one myself but it would still be a bit of dough i bet....i have been just looking into supercharging just the stock 4.0L and that would be some serious power...Jeepspeed says about 150 extra horses if you supercharge it...which is PLENTY for power for me...my 4.0L now can spin all 4 tires in full time in the rain...and its 14 years old so it doesn't have the stock 210 horsepower....more like 180ish? i would love to see a build thread for your swap! that sounds badass!

junkyards usually dont charge that much for engines or trans, i bet you could get an ls motor with trans for under 500. 180 hp right now yeah right your probably at something around 140-160ish.

Quote: that's understandable. crawling is for babies I see the fun in it but personally thats where I draw the line for cost vs. use. I'm not gonna do much engine related unless I'm really gonna be able to hoot dang it through some whoops then huck it. you'll probably have more fun with some traction devices, gears, and a loud exhaust. and you never know when a rollover is coming.. it happened to me at 7mph. even at that speed I wish I had a cage because it was enough to ruin my jeep. and suspension seats and harnesses arent just for safety. they're also good for your back. frame stiffeners arent ever a bad idea
I agree there is a line that needs to be drawn in the sand. i don't wanna drop 5k into it and never really use it to its full potential...but i also want one of the badass rides out there! i have to agree with you 100% on 2 topics...crawling is for babies and i think gearing it right and maybe locking it and a nice exhaust would be smart and still fun for me....i have been thinking about keeping the engine stock but add a "cold" air intake and a superchager. people say throttle bodies do about as much as a gun with no bullets so i'll not do that probably. i might play with the idea of a really inconspicuous internal roll cage i don't want this obnoxious big ol' beefy thing in there haha frame stiffeners for sure! i was looking into the TnT unibody stiffeners they look sweet!

Quote: After some correspondence with Chad Golen from Golen engines, I'll be going the 4.6L route with their warranty. I'd like to one day build my own stroker, but in the meantime having someone else's expertise (esp. someone like Chad) and an established business supporting their product makes me more confident in my rig. They also have a supercharged 4.6L longblock so I bet if you got some conversation going with Mr. Golen he'd have some good pointers in setting up a stroker worthy of a supercharge down the road.

360 ft/lb of torque at 4k RPM.
THANKS! i will look into that for sure! a pre-supercharged 4.6 would be awesome! i like getting my hands dirty and am a capable wrench turner but engine work is way out of my skill and confidence range but i think it would be a riot! an engine from a company would give me piece of mind! if i did it i would probably be oblivious and forget to tighten the valve cover! haha how much is your 4.6 gonna run you if you don't mind...

Quote: You think you cant rally with a lifted jeep? lol if you wanted bang for your buck the cheap way would be a small block converision plus if you went to a modern one you could get alot better MPG than a stroked 4.6l. but then again i would focus on getting the rig set up right and safe before adding more power. brakes, cage, suspension, axles, tire and wheel setup. build those to handle more power than youll use. power can always be added later. with more speed your window for error gets smaller and smaller if you dont have a safe rig and miss your window bad things happen.

personal oppinon if it was me to save cost i would find a wercked donnor truck for its drive train. then spend my budget on getting the jeep up to par.

a standard xj has enough power to get yourself in some trouble.
you have a great point, and i like to do stupid crap but i'm all for safety first! safety makes stupid things more fun haha i don't really want to swap engines because i have a passion for the 4.0L but it has crossed my mind, i could stuff a 350 small block in there i bet but that's a lot of work. but yes brakes definatly, axles most likely if not just beefy shafts, and suspension for sure! im thinking either: Zone 3", Tomken 4" w/bilstien 5150's or OME 3" and probably a durango HD stearing box swap and ZJ tackbar...just to start with the under carriage work. i don't want full width axles, i think a D30 geared, strong axle shafts and maybe locked should do it up front and the rear either a D44 or C8.25 again with gears and shafts and maybe locked...i'm still figuring out that one

The engine is 190hp at the crank, subtract about 30hp to the wheels. With worn out internals you probably have lost somewhere around 10-20hp. If you've still got some good power I highly doubt a loss of 50+hp.

A supercharged 4.6 would be sick! I want to build up a comanche like that in the future for a fun baja style truck. Not quite trophy truck status but some good long travel suspension work for sure.

that did seem like an awful lot to me...30ish seemed about right. i like your style! a 4.6 supercharged would be so gnarly! haha i'm not really into trophy that much, more Baja and rally type of terrain! love just punching the 4.0L on the beach and dirt trails! haha i just need to flex enough and have enough height to compensate for bumps at higher speeds and the occasional stump or shallow river. what would you recommend for height for fast Baja style driving? im thinking 4" MAX? 2" MIN?

Yeah I would go with a 4" lift and king shocks for baja, fiberglass fenders, and well vented hood. If you have the money or save up for a 4 link rear end. Long travel front end would work or maybe custom independent a-arms and coil overs.

If you want speed Google fastest Cherokee, sick stuff with nitrous drag race set ups pulling 12s' to 14s'. Bonus they list their build specs.

Holy hell king shocks are expensive! like 1k a set! the look rad though. is it hard to do coil overs in Cherokees? would FOX work well too? im not likely going to do any actual Baja racing...just some dunes, the beach, and some dry trails, no mud or rocks...

Yeah fox would be good if you got the extra reservoir if you plan on hitting those washboard areas at high speeds

yes that was a perfect way to put it, washboard at high speeds! so fox or king for that kind of terrain? i don't wanna drop 2k just on shocks...i gotta have money to do other stuff too haha
