how does piston wall look?
Can anyone tell me if this is what a taken care of motor's piston wall is supposed to look like on 4.0 with a lot of miles? Gonna do a stroker and I know it will get bored and honed but was just curious. This is just the #5 piston wall.
Can anyone who knows what theyre looking at, describe to me what they see and what I should look for when I take the other pistons out. Just trying to learn as much as I can.
Thanks!

Looks fairly good, you can still see the cross hatch, other than that the cylinder doesn't look scored. Best I can tell from looking at a pic. Is/was there a ridge at the top of the cylinder wall? How did the main/rod journals look?

Looks good to me, but as you said because you're going to need it bored anyway so it really doesn't matter. Just don't get any ideas to not bore it just because it looks okay.

Dont know if there was a ridge. The cylinder head and block were seperated before I bought them.
Most of this stuff is getting replaced or machined on. I just would like to know If the block is in decent shape before I take it to the machine shop and get surprised. The milage on this block and head are unknown. Heres some more pics.

Yes, cross hatching is a good thing. Are all of the pictures of the cylinder the same cylinder? From the last picture in the set, it appears that what u are seeing is where the piston skirt is riding the cylinder walls. That means the rings were pretty worn, or a lack of oil, but I cant tell for certain from the pictures. Also it appears the big end of the connecting rod shows wear. None of this is catastrophic, all can be machined back to factory or better. If u are looking for a machine shop to do the work, PM me. That's what I do.
