Hopefully a way to save $$$
In order for me to pass emissions I had to replace both O2 sensors. Well they were a PITA, so I ended up going down to O'reilly and bought an “exact-fit” Magnaflow Cat so I can install that new downstream O2.
I would like to stick with a Magnaflow exhaust cat back system and hopefully get it early next year. Well, looking at what they offer for the #15856 kit, it’s like anywhere from $400-$625.
Wondering if it would be possible to just buy the “muffler” in that setup and fab up my own exhaust pipe to make things a lot cheaper?
Just not sure which muffler will fit with that cat(#23226)?
Thanks for the help!

The catalytic converter and the muffler aren't directly connected. You got an exact fit cat so your outlet pipe from the cat should be 2 1/4". Any muffler with a 2 1/4 input will work.
Oreilly has a couple flowmasters available that are direct fit but don't show prices.
You can probably find a magnaflow that works but there are many high flow mufflers out there that will work for what you want.

you certainly can. The exhaust components are pretty much independent of one another, and any auto parts store will have adapters as well for different size piping.
For example:
I have a stock 2 1/4" downpipe, then a 2 1/4" magnaflow cat, then an adapter, followed by a 2 1/2" flowmaster muffler and a 2 1/2" tailpipe.
After collecting the parts it's just a matter of getting the correct size clamps and bolting it all up tight.

Hey, thanks a lot for the advice and suggestions!
Like mentioned before, I would like to go magnaflow all around. Well I noticed Magnaflow does not manufacture manifolds for Xj's, and wondering if anyone has suggestions for one?

Well I ended up buying a Dynomax cat-back and everything fit perfectly! Can't be too picky on the sound, I don't need it sounding like a ricer haha.
Thanks all!
