Default Help Regearing for Newbie

Hey guys I just joined the forum, been reading some learning some and I've got some questions that I'm sure have been answered and I missed.

First off, I'm new to jeeps. My dad and I hunt a lot and needed a hunting rig so we bought a 1999 Cherokee. It has 33's and a 6" Rough Country lift on it. This Jeep wont be wheeled hard ar beat on or anything like that. It is not a daily driver either. We will be hunting out of it, driving it occassionally and it will occassionally be on the interstate.

I'd like to regear it to get it to run better and the transmission to shift properly.

What gears would be best with the 33's to get it back around stock?

Will anything have to be changed to put these lower gears in the Rear or Front? I think I read about having to change the carrier but is that for the front or rear or both?

Is it mandatory to change both the rear and front? What would happen when using 4 wheel drive if I only changed the rear gears?

Also, getting the speedometer correct is only a matter of changing the gear in it?

Thanks for any help guys!

Unless you have some know how or experience, let someone who does do the RP swap. 4.56 are close to stock on 33's and YES you have to do both axles or risk blowing your diff's apart. And yes the speedo is corrected by a differently geared unit...
Sorry, no comment on the carrier..
Edit- your spedo should read about 17 percent too slow (60mph= 51mph on dash). So to go 50 you should be at about 42mph on dash.

the dana 30 does need a carrier for anything past 3.73. As for your rear, it depends on which axle it is. The chrysler 8.25 does not need a new carrier to run 4.56's

Someone else will definiately be doing the swap.

How much will a new carrier cost?

Could my 99 have either the 8.25 or Dana? The Dana does need a new carrier?

Also while you're regearing is a perfect opportunity for lockers. Do a search for how to identify your rear axle.

4.11 will be as close as you'll get to stock. 4.56 would give you a nice increase in power, and still have plenty of highway manners.
You will need a new carrier for the d30. If you don't have abs you most likely have an 8.25, but you can find pics here on how to identify it.

On your pricing a new carrier for the $30 can be had for $60 or less.

I dont really need lockers for what i'm using the jeep for.

What are the 4.56's going to limit my highway speed to?

Where would I get a new carrier?

I asked about speed due to RPM's, I didn't know if it would have the motor screamin at 70MPH.

Where would I get a new carrier? Also, unless I have the 8.25 I will need a new carrier front and rear, correct?

food for thought, these engines get the most oil to the cam end between 2000 and 2500 rpm, and is most efficient at 2100 rpm.

Like I said its 6% difference. The rpm increase is minimal. I think its in a better.range than stock honestly.
70mph would put you around 23-2400 rpm roughly.
