I have a 5 speed with a Chrysler 8.25 and basically going from my 31 to 33 was like moving all the gears up one. Pulling out sucks, 1st is now 2nd almost and so on, 5th is overdrive. I'm only on 3.07 gears I think. I'd be happy to find a set of axles out of an auto with 3.55 gears. That would get me somewhere back closer to normal but of your regearing an auto and doing it right id say most likely 4.10 will get you close to stock

I am currently setting my XJ up. Here's what I am doing, 33" tires, 4.10 gears, ARB air lockers front and back. I have 8.25 rear end. I could not find a electric locker for the front D30. I flat tow my XJ so I need a air or electric locker. I have a 3.5 RE lift installed. I am setting it up for crawling, low COG etc. It is also my DD. If you snoop around on the forum you will find a ton of excellent information, for every question you have asked there is a answer or recommendation.
What do you plan on doing with your XJ? That will determine how you set it up. If you only go out once in awhile you could just install a locker in the rear. If 31's would work you wouldn't need to regear diffs. Take your time and you could end up saving a lot of cash.
Just my 2 cents.
