I've seen a few 4-cylinder XJs with 4.10 8.25s in the DIY junk yards. If you live near a DIY yard that lists its inventory on Row52.com, the listing page for each vehicle usually tells what engine is in it. Just keep looking until you find a 4-cyl listed, then go see if it's got an 8.25 under it.
I found a LSD 4.10 8.8 Explorer axle for mine and figured it would be impossible to find a 4.10 D30 to match it. I figured I would have to regear. But instead I found one out of a 4WD 4-cyl on car-part.com. I didn't even know they made 4WD 4-cyl XJs until I started looking for axles. It should be a lot easier to find an 8.25, since there were a lot of 4-cyls made, and they all had rear axles.

Depends on how much he's willing to pay and whether he's willing to pay to have it shipped. There are a bunch of them on car-part.com right now. He might luck out and find one right down the road from where he lives. I've seen a few 4-cylinder XJs with 4.10 8.25s in the DIY junk yards. And I'm not sure I believe that most of them had the D35. A big chunk of the 4-cyls were sold as fleet vehicles to cheap-*** governments and companies and have since made their way into private ownership. We Jeep enthusiasts see the 8.25 as the preferable axle. But in car sales logic, the preferable axle would be the D35, since it had the option for ABS. A "stripped down" XJ would then likely have the 8.25, since in car sales logic it was the "inferior," "bare bones" axle that didn't offer ABS.
That's how I ended up with a D35 in my XJ way back when I bought it new and didn't know there was a different axle. The salesman never talked about axles. I bought a Limited, and if I'm not mistaken the Limited came with ABS as part of the package. I've seen several Limiteds in the JYs, and every single one of them had a D35 with ABS. The 8.25s are always under the ones with the fewest options.

What size tires are you running.
Be out 4 wheeling in no time, Then take your time and build your old front axle with gears to match your planned tire size when done, get alloy axle shafts, lockers, maybe truss it, etc, find the idea rear axle (8.25, 44, 8.8) gear it to match front, lock it, and over one weekend swap them out and have spare axles or sell the old ones.
- Dana 35's suck, and spending anytime installing or upgrading one is silly
- 8.25 with 4.10 out of 4cyl cherokee is bolt in but HARD to find
- Dana 44 Rear axle are also rare, but an good option if found
- 8.8 Explorer Axle is easy to find, but hard to adapt, welding, etc.
- An easy option no one mentioned, get a new Dana 30 HP (high pinion) front axle with 3.55 gears, easy find cheap to buy, quick bolt in.
