Headliner Replacement
I'm new here, just bought an xj 3 days ago. I'm looking to replace a headliner. In stead of going back factory I'd like to do something different. I found a 5' x 8' calico jack flag that would look good since the jeep is black and white. My question is will this be enough to cover the headliner? Allso I will need to get some separate fabric to do the sound bar I'm sure of. Thanks I hope this was posted in the right place.

Yeah, you posted in the right place.
If your xj is in good condition and not a beater, you might want to sell it one day.
Unless you find a potential buyer with the same flashy taste as you, it could either be a hard sell or dollars taken off the asking price. Just saying.
I went with a solid color headliner fabric as close as i could find to the stock color.
Take careful measurements of the headliner and add 20% more for a safety factor.
And make sure the adhesive you use is designed for automotive headliner use.
Other ordinary contact adhesives will work initially but they're not designed to take the heat abuse in hot weather when the sun fries the roof.

OK thanks for the reply. I plan to keep this jeep for a very long time. I believe it will work I was just wondering if 5 foot by 8 foot would be plenty to cover the headliner. Thanks for the Advice!
A few points of advice from when I did this;
- When you strip the original material from the board, thoroughly clean off all old adhesive and then line all of the headliner board edges with duck tape to strengthen them.
- hardest part when getting the thing re-installed is finding the holes for the screws for the sun visors. I ended up putting the screws half in before sliding the headliner back, then cutting holes again the screw heads and then taking them out, pushing a match-stick into the holes and then dropping the visor bracket onto the three match-sticks. Then easy to pull them out one by one, installing the screws as I went.
