Default Headlight Housing

So I did the typical headlight swap for the H4 but used the Autopal DOT headlight from Ebay.... Mistake. Housing glass is already broke and its only been about a week.

Did the harness install as well (100% recommend) so now I'm trying to find the best place to buy the real Hella E-Codes. Where is everyone buying them from. Has anyone had any luck with the Ebay models or (cheaper version) kit?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-HELLA-HEADLIGHT-CONVERSION-LAMP-200MM-H4-UN6207211-FREE-SHIPPING-/171335880594?hash=item27e46a0f92&vxp=mtr
This one looks like the actual headlight, just leery of the price being so low. Quadratec and 4 wheel parts want at least $100 for the set.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Looks like the price is for one headlight kit (1 housing) only. Looks like quadratec is the place i'll have to go with in order to just get housing. I have 4 bulbs already. Got the 100/80 watts hella H4 bulbs separately from the autopal kit that came with 60/55 watters.

I bought my Autopal housings from a seller on Amazon............
When they arrived, one of them was just a box of broken glass.
I contacted the seller, and he quickly shipped me a replacement one (no questions asked) and even included another pair of H4 bulbs.............

I am using Silverstar Ultra bulbs in mine, and just kept the bulbs that came with the housings as spare sets...........

I dont know where to buy better housings as price doesnt always equate to that. My Autopal ecodes are going on two years.

What part # are the SilverStar's? I've heard you can buy them for a nissan or something along those lines.

To the OP, for what its worth, you can buy the Rampage H4 housings from 4WheelParts. That's where I bought mine. I have a Putco harness on the way for them.

You can get the Hella E-codes from Quadratec. Just make sure they are the E-codes and not the DOT ones.

I believe it's a 9003-SU for a single bulb, and 9003-SU-2 for the 2Pac......

I also have a package of Silverstar ZXE bulbs that I have not even opened yet.............9003SZ-2
I'm waiting for the Silverstar Ultras to burn out first.......

Cibie housings can be purchased from Daniel Stern at Danielsternlighting.com and are the best halogen housings money can buy IMO. About $90 each iirc.

Get decent bulbs, not those blue silver star pos's. Blue is bad for night vision, bad for oncoming traffic, and that blue coating filters some light of in order to make the light look bluer, so you're wasting lumens.

I have Osram Rallye 70/65 in mine, but Phillips Rallye, Narva, Tungsram/GE, or Flösser also have equally-good bulbs.

So, you are searching for unbreakable glass?

Also worth noting that the blue lights are super awful to drive with in the rain. Not sure of the scientific reasoning, but basically the rain in part, doesn't allow the light to refract or something due to that particular light spectrum. Some sciency stuff lol. Learned the hard way in my younger sport compact days. White or super white is the way to go

The Sylvania "Silverstar" bulbs are not blue.................They have a very bright white light output................
I can't stand those blue headlamps, and would never use them.........

I think you are confusing them with those "Cool Blue" bulbs..........?

And you do realize "Osram" and "Sylvania" are the same company

I have used the 60/55 watt Silverstar bulbs for years, in my car, my motorcycles, and now my XJ, and I am very happy with their night time performance.

Also Phillips Vision series offers the exact same bulbs as the Sylvania Silverstar series................Just sayin.

I wasn't harping on Sylvania in general. I was harping on Sylvania Silverstars--those with blue coatings like the zXe that filter light out in order to shift the color of the light bluer.

Some reading:
http://danielsternlighting.com/tech/...blue/blue.html
http://danielsternlighting.com/tech/...uperwhite.html

When I have the time, I plan on putting together a thorough post explaining much of the technicalities of lighting and discussing the many options for XJ's. I plan on putting at least as much time and effort into it as another recent post (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f15/w...tires-2701698/). There is so much ignorance, laziness, bad information, misconceptions, superstitions, guesswork, etc going on out there regarding automotive lighting, and I really want to put something comprehensive together instead of trying to set people straight one little thing at a time.

Edited to make statements clearer.

It's funny, he harps on Sylvania and says they are not the same as the Osram bulbs........................However all my Silverstar bulbs say "Osram" and made in Germany on them?
And he recommends the Phillips Vision Plus bulbs, however they have the same blue coated glass that the Osram/Sylvania bulbs do?

Phillips Vision Plus bulbs are not blue-tinted. Just because Osram Sylvania is one company doesn't mean that they hold each line to the same standards--they don't.

You should really read and pay more attention since immediately after Dan mentions Phillips Vision Plus and Osram Silver Star, he writes:
Wait a Minute, Earlier You Said Silver Star Bulbs Have Blue Glass!

It's a name game: Osram, the well-established German lampmaker, sells a line of automotive bulbs they call "Silver Star". These are Osram's top-of-the-range headlamp bulbs, equivalent to Narva RangePower+50, GE Night Hawk, Philips VisionPlus, and Tungsram Megalight Premium. They produce the maximum legal amount of light while staying within legal power consumption limits. They have colorless clear glass.

Osram bought the well-established American lampmaker Sylvania in the early 1990s, so Osram is now Sylvania's parent company. Sylvania also sells a line of automotive bulbs they call "Silver Star", but it's not the same product. The Sylvania Silver Stars have blue glass. Light output is of legal levels, but as with all blue-filtered bulbs, you do not get more light from them. The Sylvania SilverStar bulbs have a very short lifetime, because the filament is overdriven to get a legal amount of light despite the blue glass.
