Another option would be to try a junkyard for a shorter shaft. I know my 2 shafts are different lenghts and they both came from a front of an xj. One is slightly shorter then the other. Maybe a ZJ also.

OP, take everything apart and take pics and see how much space there is on the IRO yoke between the end and be splines. I had to cut. iRO yoke down to gain an extra 1". My shaft iirc is either at 1" or 1.25". My IRO yoke sits almost flush to the TC. I also have an 01 so I'm not sure if that makes a difference
