stock gears and i assume stock axles with 37s. good luck with that

 

I swapped out stock axle before i even put the lift on with a Dana 44. its the stock gears in that, not 100% sure what they are

 

As stated before, it really depends on what you get it out of. But if you are even going to bother may as well get a TPI 350 from a 90's camaro in my opinion. And as for stock, i simply think the 4.0 is a more reliable motor and feels much more torqy to me then a 350, but I also havnt driven a cherokee with a 350, and a blazer obviously weighs a lot more then a cherokee

 

Simple question. did you re gear. the stock motor makes PLENTY of power but if you did not regear you wont utilize any of it....

and a stroker will be easier and cheaper to do since you dont have all the custom fab work, wiring, and new tranny to buy

 

I like my stroker - tons of torque, fraction of the cost, and reliable.

 

Well i have the peugot manual transmission which can be used with a 350. as for the fab work im not really worried about that. one of the few things i know well

 

a puegot with a 350........ Good luck with that, they can hardly handle the 4.0

 

X2 my yj had a puegot an I'm pretty sure its the worst transmission ever built in history.

Also I love my 4.7 stroker. With my Cam its lopey. Also did a tri y header flat tops milled the head. P and p and Shelby gt500 injectors. No k5 can keep up with me.

 

No, statement before was that a K5 didn't have injection, some do, some don't. As for which sbc, I went with what I had, didn't want to spend the money on upgrading the electronics, a 383 short block equaled inexpensive and reliable power. As for reliability the sbc is maybe the most reliable engine ever built. I'm not saying that the 4.0 isn't a good engine, but I think the sbc will make more power, more reliably than the I6 4.0 engine.

 

Honestly both a great choices, but your going to have way more work to do if you try to run the v8. just look into having your i6 overhauled, and for god sakes, regear.

 

U want reliability......95 cherokee with a 4.0 ho.....309450 miles on it! Have only had to replace water pump, regular tune ups, doesn't burn or leak oil and i could go out in the street right now and lay a posi patch halfway up my road. Thats RELIABLE! I am a chevy man but have yet to see any sbc with that many miles on it run that good! Gear ur jeep and do some mods to ur motor, u will be much happier!

 

I dont think it would be so much work over rebuilding the i-6

engine mounts, transmission adapter

BUT since the OP already said that he has the peugot tranny, that means he would have to ditch that before the sbc swap which would up the price/time considerably

bingo, also once you replace the tranny what about the transfer case? would that hold up to the power of a v8 without having to be replaced?

 

most of the TCs in the XJ are more than capable of handling an sbc
