I have the v8 with a glass pack and it sounds great, and still passes smog.

I just clamped mine, if your going with a glass pack your going to want to change it after it wears out in a year or 2 and it's easier to just cut the clamps then hack through the pipe

Alright I didn't think it would hold being clamped

I didn't read all of this so sorry if I repeat some stuff.

My jeep had an 18" GP and it was very aggressive. It was dumped at the axle to start with but that rusted off so I rolled a piece of sheet metal around it to move the noise back a little bit. I liked the overall sound of it.

Then there's my dad's that has a 30" cherry bomb. On the inside it sounds like a rice bomb but on the outside it sounds great.

I'm getting my exhaust done tomorrow and I might ask about an 8" GP. Otherwise it'll be straight piped with a cat

Probably not, that's the cheapest I found. It was 64.xx after taxes, I think they retail for $80 at the auto parts store

Just welding a muffler on wont do anything for you in terms of noticeable performance. I know someone who put a flow aster on and their mpg dropped.
This is not true. Most mufflers from factory have turns or walls also many have louvers sticking into exhaust flow. Just a muffler may not give a big jump in hp but it will give you a small boost over the whole rpm range. Of coarse if you want power a new non crushed downpipe( stock is 2.5" but has a crush dent) with a full 2.5" straight through ( non louvered) muffler will give all you can get out of exhaust on xj.

Ya I get what your saying and maybe I worded my response wrong but my whole point is that just slapping a new 'performance' muffler on the same old factory exhaust system won't give you the 10-15 hp gains that everyone thinks it will. And yes one of those new mufflers would work better the a factory muffler on a trick exhaust system but there's a reason why professional drag/race cars don't run mufflers, it constricts gas flow no matter what the design is. As far as I'm concerned the only reason to get a new muffler is to replace the old rotty one or make it sound cool. Not to make it run better

Also the whole point of the turns walls and louvers are to forcefully redirect the sound waves (which is the exhaust gas) so that each wave cancels out the next. Factory mufflers are literally tuned to do this properly which is why new cars are so dang quiet

Ya new cars like Porsche and BMW take it to the extreme of putting microphones in the engine bay and using opposing sound waves from the cars sound system to cancel out any noise like those new Bose sound canceling headphones. Just another $1000 repair when something like that breaks haha

-revlimiter with stock exhaust and a cherry bomb clamped in place of stock muffler. Not the best sound quality but at least it's something
