I didn't read all of this so sorry if I repeat some stuff.
My jeep had an 18" GP and it was very aggressive. It was dumped at the axle to start with but that rusted off so I rolled a piece of sheet metal around it to move the noise back a little bit. I liked the overall sound of it.
Then there's my dad's that has a 30" cherry bomb. On the inside it sounds like a rice bomb but on the outside it sounds great.
I'm getting my exhaust done tomorrow and I might ask about an 8" GP. Otherwise it'll be straight piped with a cat

A muffler won't do much if anything without a full exhaust upgrade. The whole point of a muffler is to cancel out sound waves from the exhaust gas by fitfully redirecting it in a different direction. Which means no matter what kind of muffler your using the exhaust gas is being constricted And if your still using the same crummy factory exhaust manifold or header which is designed to decrease performance in order to meet emmisions. Just welding a muffler on wont do anything for you in terms of noticeable performance. I know someone who put a flow aster on and their mpg dropped.

Of coarse if you want power a new non crushed downpipe( stock is 2.5" but has a crush dent) with a full 2.5" straight through ( non louvered) muffler will give all you can get out of exhaust on xj.

i have a cherry bomb extreme on my jeep its cut right in front of the tire.
i love it it is loud as hell. the way i like it. and is meaner than a momma bear haha
the one downside is it does have drone but it's acceptable in my opinion.

-revlimiter with stock exhaust and a cherry bomb clamped in place of stock muffler. Not the best sound quality but at least it's something
