Gearing Question
Quick question...are gears interchangeable between different axles (D35, D44, C8.25) or must donor and recipient axles be the same? E.g. Will 4.10 gears from a D35 fit a C8.25?

Gears have to come from the same axle,Most axles run different size ring gears then other.Trying to run the wrong gears they might not even fit in the housing or won't fit the diff its self. And on axles they made front and rear like a dana 60 and dana 44 some of those used reverse cut gears in the front. The reverse cut gears won't work in a rear axle.

If you plan on building up your 01 XJ a few thoughts.
If it is still stock it should have the Chy 8.25 differential, unless it has ABS then it might be a D35. If a Chy 8.25 its a 29 spline axle in it stock VG Axle and almost as strong as a D44 good for up to 35" tires/gears/locked and moderate off roading. With 33" tires your good to go for about all off road use with gears/locked. The D35 rear is a weak one and should be replaced with the Chy 8.25, direct bolt-in.
The stock front differential in an 01 XJ is the LPD30 (not so good) less ground clearance and weaker than the 99 - back HPD30's, gears do not interchange either. The front differentials should be swapped if you plan on off roading.
If all you plan on is a DD and not much off road at all both will work for you and spend money elsewhere.

Fred/N0AZZ, I have a 2000 XJ and currently have 31"s. What kind of axle/ diff does it have, and would it be better to replace it with dana?
Any advice would be very appreciative.

If it has a Chrysler 8.25, it will have a flat bottom like this:
If it's a Dana 35, it will have a round bottom like this:
If you have the 8.25, you generally do NOT want to replace it with a Dana 35. The 8.25 is a stronger axle that will support bigger tires and more abuse.
If you have the Dana 35, whether you need to replace it depends on what tire size you want to run and what kind of beating you expect it to take. The D35 is perfectly fine for mall crawling and light wheeling. If you decided you wanted to replace the D35, the 8.25 would be a direct bolt-in, but you would lose your rear ABS if you have it.
