Gear ratio swap..what parts do I need?
Alright guys, I have an 01 XJ, AW4, 3.55's, LP D30, D35 with a 4.5 lift running 32 x 11.50's. It runs down the highway alright but if I get any headwind or hills it drops into 3rd gear like crazy. Also, I can't even pull an empty 12ft trailer more than 55mph. Gas mileage is also running in the 12-13 range (was 18 before the lift and tires) so really hoping to get some of that back.
So I have decide to regear. First off, I am NOT upgrading to an 8.25 or D44. I simply don't wheel this thing like some of you do. Mainly muddy roads and soft sand on my West Texas deer lease. I plan on putting an Aussie in the front (rear is open).
What I am planning on right now is to run 4.10's since 95% of my driving is interstate. Based on my math that is going to put me really close to factory ratio to the ground. What has me confused is all the information out there regarding the LP D30 and the need to swap carriers going from 3.55 to 4.10. Can anyone tell me exactly what I am going to have to swap?
If I go to 4.10 in the LP D30 with an Aussie locker can I just get a ring/pinion with a rebuilt kit and a locker?
On the D35 do I have to change out the carrier and spiders?
I have rebuilt hundreds of 8.5" 10 bolts and ford 8.8's but have never messed with jeeps.

Front gear YG D30S-411TJ
Rear gear YG M35-411
Front master kit ZK D30-TJ
Rear master kit ZK M35
Front carrier 706008
IF a 3.55 then the rear full carrier is retained. BUT I would put a posi in it if its use is as you say you will. Which is a 74210.
Oil of your choice, I prefer 80/90 conv gear oil.
Tools.
Time.
Oh and what ever front locker you choose. If a lockright then LR 2210, if aussie I dont know as I dont deal with them.

Posi in a daily street driver? I would think that would be asking for trouble in a 35??
To confirm.... a new carrier is not needed to go from 3.55 to 4.10 in a D35?

I just changed gears same as you now have and installed lockers front and rear HD30/Chy. 8.25. In the Dana I didn't anything but the 4.56's and the Detroit Locker to make it all work, no carrier needed. I guess it just depends on the locker you use.
I am running 33's on my XJ and decided on the 4.56's lots of weight, drag, lift, 12:50 tires 12 to 13 mpg. Since the gear change it has came back up to 15.6 last fill-up no more constant gear changes on the highway either. You might want to think more about those 4.10's.
I bought my gear package from Rustys Off Road everything you need for the job plus the master install kits for both also, as I remember everything was under $500.

I would get a empty HP 30 housing & install gears & a locker in it since it's stronger than a LP 30. I'd also find a 4.11 geared 8.8 in a JY. It would already be geared, 31 spline & have disc brakes.
