So I have a 4.0L Manual with 4.5 inch lift and 33x12.5 inch tires. I am going to re-gear my axles prior to an Alaskan trip. I am seeking help with which gear ratio to go with. Stock is a 3.07 ratio which came with 28.3 inch tires. keeping stock, I would need a 3.57, I am between the 3.55 or 3.73. my Jeep is my daily driver and will be driving the 48 or so hours highway to and from Alaska, but I also have a bumper/tire carrier with full spare, a roof track that will filled with stuff as well as the inside. if anyone has any input on a manual trans lift with re-gearing that would be appreciated! Be Well!
All of you that replied, do any of you have manuals with 3.07 stock gearing? or is this all based off of automatics with stock 3.55
I had 3.07 gears on a couple of TJs. Same engine and trans and nearly the same weight. 4.56 brings your rpm's back to stock with 33s. Anything less will be under geared. It's not an opinion, it's a fact. Check out the gearing charts at Grimm Jeeper.

4.56 with 33s would have your rpms way higher than stock with 3.07 gears.
That's a good thing. 3.07 gears suck with stock tires. Nobody thinks the rpm's are acceptable. No 5 speed Jeep should have ever come with anything other than the common 3.73 that a lot of TJs have. My Rubicon came stock with 4.10 and 31" tires. That was fine with little tires. If it was an auto, I would have went with 5.38 when I went to 35s.. Check the chart.

You said that 4.56 gears with 33s brings you close to the RPM with stock tires and 3.07 gears, that is incorrect, 3.73 gears is the closest. I do agree that you need to go a little bit lower than that, at least 4.10 gears or 4.56 if you plan on 35s in the future.

I just tested out your calculator and it says 33s with 3.73s would be nearly the same as stock. Dont know where you are getting 4.56s from....
Left is stock. Right is 33s with 3.73s.

So ya.... this^^^^^
I get it from having many 5 speed Jeeps with 33s and 35s. 3.73 gears are barely good enough for 31s. Most TJ's come stock with 3.73 gears and 28-30" tires. I'll let you drive my 5 speed Rubicon with 5.13 gears and you'll never want to drive an under-geared Jeep again. Better yet, check out JF.com and actually learn something. CAUTION!!! I've got a 98 with the ax15, 4.0l and 4.11's with 31" tires. Going to go with 33's when the 31's wear out. 2100 rpm at 55 with the 31's and about 2750 at 75 with my setup. It has plenty of power and gets decent fuel mileage with this combo. If you are going to stay with the 33's i'd say 4.11's are the ticket for you.

I think you missed the OPs whole point. He said he wanted a good gear ratio for long trips. High gear ratios do not equate to good gas mileage. Out of the 5 manual Jeeps I have owned, varying from stock to 35" tires, I stand by my original statement. Sure if I was building a Jeep that I only drove around town or on trails, I would make a different choice. But for long distance driving, keep it close to the stock ratio to keep the good gas mileage. Let me guess, you are going to tell me your Rubicon on 5.13s gets 22-24 mpg on the highway doing 75 mph right? Ya highly doubt it.
